Hahn Races to First Win of his Career

ATLANTA (February 23, 2013) – In the largest attended Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race in 2013, 68,987 fans watched Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart win his first 450SX Class race of the season. GIECO Honda’s Wil Hahn led wire to wire in tonight’s Eastern Regional 250SX Class Main Event en route to the first victory of his career.

Opening the 450SX Class Main Event with the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award, Stewart – for the first time this season – led all 20 laps on the way to the win. Villopoto started the race in second place and chased down Stewart for the duration of the race, but came up 1.468 seconds short and finished second. Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps, who started the race mid pack, moved into third place on Lap 2, and finished third.

Stewart has now gone nine seasons with a win, tying Jeremy McGrath and Chad Reed in this exclusive category. Villopoto moved into second place in season standings, and Millsaps has a 22-point lead in the championship.

“I mean, what can I say, we won tonight,” said Stewart. “It [means] a lot; this whole season has been going crazy and to get a victory and to get a start, it was almost a perfect day. I was fastest in practice, fastest in the Heat Race, I got the holeshot in the Main Event and led every lap. I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous because I haven’t been out there in a while.”

Stewart is the fifth different winner eight races this season.

Hahn led the field of Eastern Regional 250SX Class riders across the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot line in turn one as Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson and Rockstar Energy Racing’s Blake Wharton tucked in behind him for second and third, respectively. Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin made a pass for second place on Wharton on Lap 2.

Hahn opened the season with a third-place finish last weekend and with tonight’s win, he moved into second place overall. Wilson, who finished second tonight, still has the championship points lead. Wharton finished third and is third overall.

“I put in a lot of hard work, and it paid off here tonight,” said Hahn. “I stayed positive out there and rode a smart race. It’s an amazing feeling to get my first win here at the Georgia Dome in front of so many fans. This has been a long time coming.”

Former 250SX Class Champion Tim Ferry’s son Evan won tonight’s KTM Junior Supercross Challenge.

Monster Energy Supercross resumes next weekend at St. Louis’ Edward Jones Dome.

Podium for Marvin Musquin; Dungey sixth at Atlanta Supercross

KTM Racing New SX Atlanta Rd. 8

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Marvin Musquin of France grabbed his first podium of the season in the second race of the FIM SX 250s East Coast series in the Georgia Dome, Atlanta on Saturday night. Teammate Ryan Dungey recovered a rough start to finish sixth in the 450s to stay third overall in the points at the eighth round of the FIM US Supercross Series.Musquin was placed in heat number two where he jumped off to a second place start but he then lost a place to Wil Hahn in lap four. The French rider went on the attack and he and Hahn both caught leader Zach Bell and made the pass on him in the final lap. Hahn went on to take the win while Musquin finished second to earn a top spot in gate selection for the main event.

Musquin started the main event in fifth position and quickly passed Justin Hill to take over fourth place. He then slipped into podium contention in the third lap after passing Blake Wharton. Once in third he hung on to the spot for the remaining laps to earn his first podium of the season in only his competition second track outing for 2013.

The track was fun today. It was very technical and I enjoyed racing at the Georgia Dome. I had great practice times and I had a decent start in the main, and of course, it is nice to be back on the podium. Unfortunately, I just wasn’t able to catch up to the leaders today but I will come back stronger next week and hope to continue to improve,” commented Musquin.

Dungey retains third in the points
Meanwhile Dungey was placed in 450SX heat number one and was fifth out of the gates. He caught Mike Alessi and made a pass for fourth on the fifth lap of the race. He then had a small off in the final lap and lost a couple of positions to finish seventh to still transfer to the main event.

Dungey missed the start in the main but was still in the top ten rounding the first corner. He made a quick recovery and was seventh after the first few corners before slipping into sixth in lap six. He quickly reeled in the fifth place ride of Trey Canard and the two battled for that spot for the remainder of the race. But at the flag, Dungey was unable to make the pass and had to settle for sixth.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the best start and I wasn’t able to put myself in the best position for the overall tonight. I am definitely disappointed in my result but the five guys ahead of me rode really well tonight. I know what to work on and will come back stronger for St. Louis,” stated Dungey.

Red Bull KTM Team Manager Roger DeCoster, commented, “It wasn’t a great night for Ryan. He rode well but the top riders are making no mistakes and we need to work on improving his starts to put him in a better position to fight for the overall.”

Georgia's Own Davi Millsaps Leads Monster Energy Supercross Championship into the Georgia Dome

Wilson Strikes First in Eastern Regional 250SX Championship with Opening Race Win

AURORA, Ill.(February 18, 2013) – After a record-setting 71,009 fans packed the Georgia Dome for last year’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race, the world’s greatest racers are returning to the Georgia clay this Saturday night, led by points leader Davi Millsaps. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson won the opening race of the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Championship last weekend and brings a three-point lead into this weekend’s race.

Two-time defending Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto won his third race of the season last weekend at Cowboys Stadium, leading every lap of the Main Event. Villopoto moved around Millsaps, who won the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award, shortly after the first turn and never looked back.

“Starts are definitely important,” said Villopoto, who now has the most wins in the championship. “I’ve had a target on my back this year, everyone knows that, and it’s stressful. I’m just trying to have fun with riding again. If we get third, it’s on the podium, and if it’s second, that’s good too. Davi (Millsaps) has been riding really good this year, so we have to just chip away at it. It’s going to take a while.”

The championship points race gives Rockstar Energy Racing’s Millsaps a 21-point lead over Ryan Dungey and a 24-point lead over Villopoto as the championship nears its halfway point. The key to Millsaps’ success this year has been his consistency; he has finished on the podium in six of seven races this season and has yet to finish outside of the top five.

“It was definitely a good 20 laps,” said Millsaps after the race at Cowboys Stadium. “I haven’t ridden all week because I’ve been sick, so it’s good to come away with a strong finish. Ryan (Villopoto) rode really well, so you have to give it to him.”

Red Bull KTM’s Dungey finished third overall. Bad luck continues to follow Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart. After winning his Heat Race earlier in the evening, Stewart was unable to start the Main Event, citing a broken clutch. He dropped to ninth in the championship.

In the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Main Event of AG Motorsports Honda’s Kyle Peters who grabbed the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award. Chasing Peters through turn one was Wilson and Rockstar Energy Racing’s Blake Wharton assumed second and third place, respectively.

Wilson worked his way past Peters prior to the conclusion of the opening lap and then pulled away from the field to lead all 15 laps of the Main Event and claim his sixth-career 250SX Class victory.

“This feels so good,” exclaimed Wilson. “It’s been 10 months waiting for that. I knew I needed to get the start, so I fought for it and it went well. I saw the leader and I knew I was good in the whoops, so I just went on the outside around him. He raced clean and I respect that. From there I just rode my own race.”

Wharton held on for second and GIECO Honda’s Wil Hahn finished third.

During last year’s annual stop at the Georgia Dome, Dungey grabbed his second win of the season and the ninth of his career. GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham, who retired earlier this season, made history by making his 200th career 450SX Class start. Last year’s Eastern Regional 250SX Class Main Event was won by Justin Barcia who is now racing in the premier class.
The first supercross race held in Atlanta was March 5, 1977, and Bob Hannah won on a Yamaha. On February 22, 1986 Honda rider Keith Turpin won the first-ever 250SX Class Main Event in Atlanta. To date, Ricky Carmichael sits on top of the 450SX Class’ all-time win list at the Georgia Dome with five wins. Carmichael, Brian Swink and Christophe Pourcel share the 250SX Class’ all-time win record with two.
The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross round from Atlanta will be broadcast LIVE on SPEED on Saturday February 23 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Villopoto on a run

Courtesy of FIM NEWS

The seventh race of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, signified the 2013 season’s move east with 54,036 fans in attendance inside Cowboys Stadium. For the third time this season, reigning back-to-back champion Ryan Villopoto posted a dominant effort en route to victory aboard his Monster Energy Kawasaki, leading every lap of the Main Event. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson won the opening race of the Eastern Regional 250SX Class Championship, which will be in action for the next eight stops.

Championship leader Davi Millsaps edged out Villopoto to claim theNuclear Cowboyz®Holeshot Award at the start of the 450SX Class Main Event, but a little more momentum helped Villopoto slip past his Rockstar Energy Racing-mounted rival just a few feet later. Not long after, TwoTwo Motorsports Honda’s Chad Reed made an aggressive move to steal second from Millsaps, which allowed Villopoto to open an early gap.

While Villopoto continued to pull away, the battle for the podium intensified. Millsaps reclaimed second place on Lap 3 and settled into the position. Reed appeared to have a secure hold on third, but Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey began to apply pressure, ultimately making slight contact with Reed after an aggressive pass for the position on Lap 14. Dungey pushed hard in the closing laps to have a chance at stealing second from Millsaps, but couldn’t get alongside his championship rival in the end.

Villopoto moved into sole possession of third in the championship point standings with his 27th career 450SX Class victory.

Davi has been riding really good this year, so we have to just chip away at it. It’s going to take a while.”

Millsaps’ runner-up finish was his sixth podium in seven races this season, while Dungey extended his podium streak to four with his third-place result.

“It was definitely a good 20 laps,” said Millsaps, who extended his points lead. “I haven’t ridden all week because I’ve been sick, so it’s good to come away with a strong finish. Ryan (Villopoto) rode really well, so you have to give it to him.”

Millsaps moved to 21 points ahead of Dungey in the standings, with Villopoto now sitting 24 points behind in third. After winning his Heat Race earlier in the evening, Team Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart was unable to start the Main Event, citing a broken clutch. He dropped to ninth in the championship.

A lot of excitement surrounded the first Eastern Regional 250SX Class Main Event of the season and out of the gate it was AG Motorsports Honda’s Kyle Peters who grabbed the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award. Behind him, Wilson and Rockstar Energy Racing’s Blake Wharton assumed second and third place.

Wilson worked his way past Peters prior to the conclusion of the opening lap and then pulled away from the field to lead all 15 laps of the Main Event and claim his sixth career 250SX Class victory.

Wharton made a pass on Peters shortly after Wilson took over the lead and secured the runner-up position throughout the remainder of the Main Event. Earlier in the evening, Wharton needed a win in the LCQ in order to secure his spot in the Main Event. Peters battled to hold on to third place, but was passed by Honda rider Cole Thompson on Lap 6. After Thompson crashed out of the race, Peters reclaimed the spot, but succumbed to the pressure from GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn on Lap 10. Hahn maintained the position to round out the podium.

Wilson will carry a three-point lead into the second race of the championship next weekend.

Matt LeBlanc took the win in tonight’s KTM Junior Supercross Challenge, which was in action for the second time this season with 15 riders from around the region invited to compete.

Monster Energy Supercross continues next weekend, from Atlanta with its annual visit to the Georgia Dome. The eighth race of the 2013 season begins next Saturday, February 23, at 7 p.m. ET. SPEED will provide live coverage of the race at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Dean Wilson Dominates Opening Eastern Regional 250SX Class Championship Race

ARLINGTON, Texas(February 16, 2013) – The seventh race of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, signified the 2013 season’s move east with 54,036 fans in attendance inside Cowboys Stadium.

Championship leader Davi Millsaps edged out Villopoto to claim the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award at the start of the 450SX Class Main Event, but a little more momentum helped Villopoto slip past his Rockstar Energy Racing-mounted rival just a few feet later.
