Paulo Gonçalves on the Honda CRF450 RALLY

TEAM HRC continues to lead the Morocco Rally. In a 298 km second stage, including 240 against the clock, ‘Speedy’ Gonçalves carved out an amazing victory that places hims at the top of the leaderboard. The other TEAM HRC riders put in fine performances too, with Sam Sunderland third and Joan Barreda in fifth.

Another day, another type of rally. After the sand and dunes of yesterday’s opening stage, today saw an entire day of rocky mountain terrain with a lot of navigation. Joan Barreda started out first and rode a fine race, although this allowed the other riders to follow his tracks and thus gain time. His colleague TEAM HRC rider Paulo Gonçalves, seemed at ease on his Honda CRF450 RALLY and kept up the consistency in the first leg, before pushing hard in the later stages. Around Zagora he was practically unbeatable. Gonçalves finds himself leading in the overall standings after two days of rally.

British rider Sam Sunderland also put in a fine performance, overcoming a slight navigational error early on in the special and finishing in third. Joan Barreda’s fifth place leaves him behind Gonçalves in the overall standings. A good all-round team effort.

The tough rocky terrain suited much less Argentine Javier Pizzolito, who is looking forward again to the sand and dunes, where he hopes to better today’s seventh place.

Finally, Hélder Rodrigues, who set out from fourth position suffered an electronic failure some fifteen km from the end of the stage.

It was a mountain and rocky stage with a lot of navigation. I think I did well trying to stay on course. The Honda CRF450 RALLY never ceases to amaze me. In the hard terrain the traction is very important and it’s been great to see how it handles the curves. Let’s see how the next four days play out in this tough rally.

A very tough one today with loads of navigation and a lot of rocks. I kept up a great speed until the end after I had a small error near the start. I lost a little time but after was able to push hard. I navigated well and I’m happy.

I’m very pleased. Having two fast riders like Marc and Paulo behind pushing all day, means that I’ve got to be happy with the result. There was a lot of difficult navigation and I had to mark out the route up front. Tomorrow I start behind them so hopefully I’ll catch up and we can stay together.

We’ve finished a really hard, complicated stage with a lot of rocks. I’m getting used to that type of terrain now. It’s been a very positive stage and the idea was to not lose time. I think if I keep up this pace I should be able to make it up among the leaders.

Back in the sand! The Cheggaga erg will be the playground of this third stage where co-pilots will have to keep an eye on the caps. The start will be on a rolling, fast track before the competitors descend into the valley via a simple but uneven track. On a sandy and undulated track, they will follow the Cheggaga Erg to reach Lake Iriki. Amateurs of speed will enjoy this fast portion on the lake, but co-pilots should keep an eye on their notes in order to reach the most Westerly point of the rally. The return takes place at the cap in order to cross the chott and access the dunes. Those who like the sand will be delighted! As these are the most beautiful dunes of the rally. Pilots must follow the caps to escape the erg via beautiful easy tracks with many parallels to reach the finish.

Dos Sertoes: Coma bounces back to win longest stage

Courtesy of KTM

Consummate rally professional KTM’s Marc Coma bounced back from a difficult marathon stage on Wednesday to take a spectacular stage win on Thursday and prove with three days still to go, there is still everything to play for in the Dos Sertoes Rally in Brazil.

On Tuesday Coma was forced to take the cautious approach after discovering cracks in his wheel in the marathon stage where no mechanical help is permitted. He lost the overall lead, dropping to seventh but he put that behind him on Thursday and delivered a convincing victory in Stage seven, the longest of this demanding rally. With three days to go on this 4110 km sweep through central Brazil, there is still plenty to play for.

Coma today was able to close the gap and climb from seventh to third place, 32 minutes and 34 seconds behind the overall leader Paulo Gonçalves. Perhaps more importantly he closed the gap on traditional rival Cyril Despres to 15 minute 25 seconds. Despres was sixth on the day to lose the lead to Goncalves.

Coma was 11th out of the start on Thursday in what proved to be the longest and most complicated of stages through semi desert areas and low scrub.
He set a good pace from the 150 km mark and made it stick to go on and win the stage.

But while Coma’s fortunes turned around on Thursday, those of his Polish teammate Kuba Przygonski’s did not. After moving up to third overall on Wednesday, the Polish KTM factory rider finished tenth and is now seventh in the general standings.

Coma has three days to chip away at the gap between him and Goncalves and two stages are long and complicated. Tomorrow riders go form
Palmas and Minaçu over 666 km of demanding track of which 312 km is timed special. The Dos Sertoes is also the fifth round of the World Cross Country Rally Championship and Coma is on his way to defending his title.

Marc Coma: “It was a good stage and we were able to make up positions. It was the toughest stage of the rally, with many competitive kilometers and with lots of sand, that always demands more in terms of riding. It was very difficult in the first part because there was a lot of dust. It was also difficult to overtake the many riders who were in front of me. But after I got in front of them I was more or less on my own and I was able to find my rhythm and set my own pace. It was important for us to complete it the way we did: without making mistakes and working well. There is still a lot of racing. We have three days, two of them very complicated, and everything is possible. ”

Cash in with the Monster Energy MXGP Festival prize fund for amateurs

Courtesy of Youthstream Media

FUNCHAL (Portugal), 31 July 2013 – The countdown to the 2013 MXGP Festival is officially on and Monster Energy are psyched to share what they have in store for the second edition of this massive event. Once again, Matterley Basin will gather together tens of thousands of fans plus riders from multiple classes in Winchester from August 22-25 where the festival will see action from both Pro and Amateur classes.

As part of the packed-out programme at one of the best circuits in Europe, Monster are ready to spur-on all those in the popular Amateur category with a hefty prize fund that will reward £1000 to the winner, £600 to second position and £400 to the third place finisher.

The 2013 MXGP Festival is again an unmissable date for those with the remotest interest in off-road motorcycles. The presence of the world’s best racers from ten different divisions – from the premier MX1 outfit of the FIM Motocross World Championship, that will see Tommy Searle look to produce another grandstand performance, across to the fastest ladies around in the Women’s world series – means Matterley will again be a unique experience for spectators and those eager to join in.

For the Amateurs out there the Festival is a huge chance to share track space with some of the stars of the sport. Opportunities like this don’t come around that often and that’s why Monster is pumped to be a part of it. Already over fifty revved-up part-time race heads are set to pull into Matterley in a matter of weeks and the deadline date for inclusion is coming around really fast – the period for inscription for the amateur races has been exceptionally extended till 9th August. Contact your national federation to receive more information.

Dos Sertoes: Przygonski to third in overall points after Stage Five

Courtesy of KTM

KTM’s Jakub Przygonski moved up to third overall on Stage Five of the Dos Sertoes Rally on Wednesday. Factory teammate Marc Coma of Spain finished back at twenty fifth place after experiencing a rear wheel problem in the second part of the marathon stage where no mechanical assistance is allowed.

‘Kuba’ Przygonski finished third in the stage and made up some time in the process. He was around two minutes behind the stage winner Cyril Despres, the new overall leader and trails him by 22 minutes in the overall rankings.

Coma’s misfortune cost him 42 minutes and dropped him from overall leader down to seventh place and he will have to work hard to try to make up time in the remaining stages of this rally that takes riders more than 4100 km through central Brazil. Coma is now seventh overall, 38 minutes and 56 seconds behind his old teammate and rival Despres.

Coma had noticed some cracks in his rear wheel at the start of the stage and its condition deteriorated as the day wore on. He eventually had to stop to try to try to rectify the situation as far as was possible under the rules of the marathon stage. He then continued to battle all the way to the finish and will now have to work hard to try to make up some of the lost time during Thursday’s Stage Six. Over 746 kilometers, 514 of them timed, it represents the longest stage of the 2013 edition. It starts and finishes in Palmas.

Like the consummate professional that he is, Coma said at the end of the day that he had had to go slow for the entire special. “It was amazing that we made it to the finish. Now I will try to make up some position between now and the end of the rally, but without taking any unnecessary risks. Besides, there is still a lot left in the race,” he added.

Ruben Faria, the third member of the KTM factory team had to retire after a crash on Tuesday.
