Ben Watson Strengthens Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 in 2018

Yamaha Motor Europe is pleased to strengthen Kemea Yamaha Official MX2‘s line-up with the addition of the 2017 British MX2 Champion Ben Watson.
The team will place a Yamaha YZ250F in the capable hands of the 20-year-old Brit where he and his teammates, 22-year-old Russian talent Vsevolod Brylyakov and Belgium’s teenage sensation, 17-year-old Jago Geerts, will hotly contest the highly competitive 2018 FIM MX2 World Championship.
Ben Watson has been on Yamaha’s radar for many years having won multiple national championships in the youth ranks before making the leap into the European EMX250 class in 2014, where he proved his worth by finishing inside the top-three in four races, two of which, he won.
After finishing fifth place in the 2014 EMX250 Championship, Watson entered his rookie season in the 2015 FIM MX2 World Championship where he finished 21st despite missing a number of rounds. Having learnt and developed from his first term in MX2, the promising young Brit lined up competed in three rounds of the 2016 MX2 World Championship before a leg injury at the MXGP of Argentina put him out for the remainder of the year. Fully recovered in 2017, the teenager completed his second season in MX2 where he finished inside the top-ten in eight races and was fifteenth place in the final classification.

The entire Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team are all set to begin their preparations for the 2018 FIM MX2 World Championship season. The new combination of Watson, Brylyakov, Geerts and the potent YZ250F is an exciting prospect. All of the riders will be based in Belgium, less than 45 minutes from the teams’ base in Genk. They will be trained and mentored by former world champion Jacky Vimond with added support from the team manager and legend in his own right, Marnicq Bervoets.

Superb Start for Lorenzo at Silverstone

| Silverstone (Great Britain), 30th August 2013 Defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo made a strong start to this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone in today’s two free practice sessions. The Mallorcan wrapped up day one as the fastest rider overall, 0.224 seconds clear of closest rival Marc Marquez. His fastest time of 2’02.734 seconds takes him underneath the fastest race lap of last year’s Grand Prix, set by himself. Lorenzo led the entire second session and completed the morning practice in second, 0.219 seconds behind Marquez. Valentino Rossi made big steps forward over the course of today. The Italian nine-time world champion was 0.866 seconds off the fastest lap in the morning session in sixth place with a 2’04.682 lap. Some hard work over the day saw him improve by over a second to complete the afternoon practice in fifth with a 2’03.480 second lap. |

“After a few Grand Prix we start this weekend in a really different way. We have been really fast since the beginning and the most important thing is the pace is really good. Both riders are quite satisfied with their set up, we know that we have to improve and we know which area to do it in. We also tested both tyre choices so we have completed a lot of work. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 28, 2013) – Round 9 of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va. last weekend marked the first time ever that the series raced on the 1.25-mile pea gravel surface. Jared Mees (Rogers Racing/Harley-Davidson) took advantage of a Bryan Smith (Crosley Radio/Kawasaki) mechanical issue on lap nine and cruised to his first victory of the 2013 season.
“I’ve had a very up-and-down season with injuries and what not,” said Mees. “More than anything I just wanted to win the race.”
For the first eight laps, it looked as if Smith would run away with his third victory of the season as he at one point controlled a very comfortable lead. Unfortunately for the Flint, Mich. product, his Kawasaki EX650 came up lame out of turn two on the ninth lap and forced him off the lead. After critical seconds had passed, Smith was indeed able to get his bike working again but it was too late. Smith was unable to make up the ground he’d lost and would go on to finish 12th, 25.362 seconds behind Mees.
“Virginia was a heartbreaker,” said Smith. “Mainly because I thought I had a really good chance to win. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, too. When I went down, one of the first people I saw pass me was Brad (Baker) and I thought to myself ‘there goes the championship’. Then when I finally got my bike running again, he went down less than 30 seconds later and it was just a crazy chain of events. I’m really looking forward to Springfield and I have a tremendous amount of confidence in my team to give me the best chance to win moving forward.”
Another notable rider to go down because of motorcycle issues was current Grand National Championship points leader Brad Baker (Dodge Bros Racing/Harley-Davidson). Baker was in serious contention with Mees for second place before Smith sputtered out and wasn’t far off the lead when he too had his motorcycle let him down. The severity of Baker’s mishap, however, proved to be much worse than Smith’s as the Eatonville, Wash. product was unable to continue racing, resulting in a catastrophic 19th place finish and putting his championship title hopes in jeopardy.
Winn, Mich.’s Henry Wiles (Lloyd Brothers Racing/Ducati) charged the field after starting all the way back on the fourth row to finish second in the main event. Wiles got a tremendous start and made his way up to the front group of riders within the race’s first few laps.
“The Ducati was running good,” said Wiles. “I got off to a great start which was a huge factor in me coming in second. I have to thank my team and the slew of guys that are behind me, I can’t thank them enough.”
Starting from ninth on the grid, Brandon Robinson (TJ Burnett Farms/Kawasaki) followed up his impressive second-place finish at the Indy Mile with a third-place effort at Colonial Downs. A combination of a little luck with Baker and Smith falling out has put Robinson back in Grand National Championship discussions as the Oxford, Pa. native now sits third in the points.
“It feels pretty good, especially after my heat crash while I was leading,” said Robinson. “It was a long race for sure. I didn’t get the best start after missing a shift but I just battled and kept pushing. Jared (Mees) and Henry (Wiles) were riding great, when I got in third position I just wanted to take it easy and land on the podium again.”
Starting from the fifth slot, Briar Bauman (Monster Energy Kawasaki/Kawasaki) edged out Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. (Harley-Davidson Motor Co./Harley-Davidson) by .009 seconds to finish fourth for his best performance this season. The Salinas, Calif. product has landed in the top five in two out of the last three main events and looks to be heating up down the homestretch. Coolbeth Jr.’s fifth-place effort was equally impressive as he did so after starting from 15th on the grid.

Luckily for Cody Johncox (Sunnyside Cycle/Yamaha), the AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles main event was 10 laps and not an inch further as the New Yorker came out on top in a three-way photo finish between himself, Shayna Texter (Crosley Radio/DFW Honda) and Stephen Vanderkuur (Parkinson Brothers Racing/Honda).
“It was great to win the first AMA Pro Flat Track main event held at Colonial Downs,” said Johncox. “I got as small as I could on the final backstretch and just prayed they didn’t draft by me.”
Despite starting the main event from 10th on the grid, Texter fought her way to the stripe to finish second and it could have just as easily been her atop the podium if the race consisted of any more laps. Texter’s runner-up performance marks her third straight finish inside the top two in mile-long races.
“I unfortunately put myself on the second row to start the main event but I was able to put my head down and go to work,” said Texter. “I came up a little bit short but it still is good for the points and I can’t thank my team enough for working their butts off all day. I was also nice to have my family in attendance for the first time in a while.”
Vanderkuur’s third-place finish lifted him to third in the point standings and the defending J&P Cycles Pro Singles champion has given himself a chance to repeat with four rounds remaining.
Jeffrey Lowery (Englehart Racing/Honda) and current J&P Cycles Pro Singles points leader Wyatt Maguire (Kirkland Racing/Yamaha) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, after the two were tangled up on the final lap. Lowery edged out Maguire by a mere .013 seconds for fourth place.
There wasn’t a lot of movement at the top of the J&P Cycles Pro Singles point standings with Maguire finishing fifth and Ryan Wells (Waters Auto Body/Honda), who currently sits in second place in the points, finished sixth on his Honda CRF450R.

Yamaha Prepare for the British Grand Prix

The MotoGP paddock continues its relentless pace this weekend as the paddock heads from Brno in the Czech Republic to Silverstone in the UK for the third consecutive race weekend, the British Grand Prix.
The fast and flowing Silverstone track will hopefully give the best possible opportunity for Yamaha Factory Racing riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi to make the most from their YZR-M1 machines and fight for podium glory.
The British Grand Prix returned to Silverstone in 2010 having been run at Donington Park since 1987. In its three year return Lorenzo has taken two wins in the premier class, the first in 2010 and the second last year in 2012. The reigning world champion scored one 250cc win in Donington in 2006.
Rossi has yet to take a win at the Silverstone circuit but is a favourite with the British crowd having taken numerous wins at the Donington track including three premier class MotoGP wins in 2002, 2004 and 2005, two 500cc wins in 2000 and 2001, a 250cc win in 1999 and a 125cc win in 1997.
The 5.9km Silverstone circuit straddles the Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire borders and was first used for impromptu car racing in 1947. It is most famous as the home of the British Formula One Grand Prix, which was first held there in 1948 and has been contested at the track every year since 1987. Silverstone is no stranger to bike racing, with the 500cc machines having raced there from 1977 to 1986. MotoGP returned in 2010 after extensive alterations to the track including re-modelled sections and faster, sweeping corners to tailor it to the current MotoGP machines. With plenty of overtaking opportunities it is sure to provide an exciting spectacle come race day.

“Silverstone is another track that is usually very popular. As a rider Jorge likes the track but also for the bike it is not a bad layout. Of course the weather conditions at Silverstone are always changing a lot and normally this is the key point of the weekend. Overall it is very good for us there so we’ll try to push all of these boys a little bit more. We never give up!”

“We go to Silverstone knowing that we must do something more. The result of the Brno Grand Prix wasn’t negative, but we want to do better. In Silverstone we want our revenge. Silverstone is a very fast track and is suitable enough to the characteristics of our bike. In the past we have had good results there so we go to England with optimism.”
