Superb Start for Lorenzo at Silverstone

Courtesy of Yamaha Factory Racing

Silverstone (Great Britain), 30th August 2013
Defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo made a strong start to this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone in today’s two free practice sessions. The Mallorcan wrapped up day one as the fastest rider overall, 0.224 seconds clear of closest rival Marc Marquez. His fastest time of 2’02.734 seconds takes him underneath the fastest race lap of last year’s Grand Prix, set by himself. Lorenzo led the entire second session and completed the morning practice in second, 0.219 seconds behind Marquez.

Valentino Rossi made big steps forward over the course of today. The Italian nine-time world champion was 0.866 seconds off the fastest lap in the morning session in sixth place with a 2’04.682 lap. Some hard work over the day saw him improve by over a second to complete the afternoon practice in fifth with a 2’03.480 second lap.

“I started very fast because I improved almost one second and a half in the beginning; I was surprised with the improvement. At this track, when the rear tyre starts to drop it’s very difficult to keep the same pace so we have to work hard to make a constant bike that works over long distance. I’m satisfied because I think we have the possibility to fight for the victory this time.”

“I enjoyed today a lot, this track is great. If you are able to ride at the limit and have a good feeling with the bike, it’s very funny because it’s very fast, the track is so wide you go a lot of time at full throttle. I’m quite happy with the first day, especially because in the last two years I suffered a lot here in Silverstone. We made a good step, but we still have to work to find the right setting to have a good balance form the beginning to the end of the race. I’m not so bad in braking and entry but I have some problems in other areas so we have to work. We modified the setting from Brno because in the last two races I wasn’t strong enough.”

“A very good first day. First of all because the weather is very stable and it’s a nice temperature compared with last year which helps the lap times. The pace is already there so it looks like we have to make some small adjustments but the bike feels good and we are looking forward to qualifying tomorrow.”

Yamaha Factory Racing Massimo Meregalli
Team Director

“After a few Grand Prix we start this weekend in a really different way. We have been really fast since the beginning and the most important thing is the pace is really good. Both riders are quite satisfied with their set up, we know that we have to improve and we know which area to do it in. We also tested both tyre choices so we have completed a lot of work. We are pretty focused and we are very optimistic about the race.”

MX3 Heads to Czech Republic – Top Five Recap

Courtesy of Youthstream Media

PACOV (Czech Republic), 29 August 2013 – Built by the hands of motocross enthusiast’s way back in the 1960’s, the hard pack circuit of Pacov, Czech Republic, gets ready to host round eight of the FIM MX3 World Championship, as well as the fifth round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship.
Coming into this round, Slovenian Klemen Gercar has been consistent all season and currently holds onto the red plate with a fifteen point advantage over local hero Martin Michek, and Chiara Fontanesi is travelling to the Czech Republic with 31 points advantage over Natalie Kane, who won the British round last weekend in Matterley Basin.

MX3
Martin Michek was the runner up in the 2012 FIM MX3 Championship and looks to be picking up momentum in the 2013 MX3 championship as his result’s gradually improve. Looking at his points patterns at the recent rounds, Czech Michek will definitely be on the hunt for glory this weekend as he lines up for his home round.

Third in the championship is the defending champion Matthias Walkner. Walkner has had a season of ups and downs, at the previous round in Matterley Basin the Austrian finished second in race one but was plagued with bad luck in race two when he was caught up in some first corner carnage. This weekend we are expecting to see him steal back some valuable championship points, but as we have seen in previous rounds, anything can happen.

A further twenty-five point’s back from Walkner, in fourth is the round one winner and early red plate holder Gert Krestinov. Krestinov has had moments of greatness this season, proving he is more than capable of winning. The Estonian said earlier in the season his lack of results on the hard pack circuits were due to not enough hard pack training, but now as we enter the closing stages of the championship we expect that he has done the work required, making him a definite podium contender.

Rounding out the top five is Frantisek Smola; after spending the last two years chasing his dreams in the USA, Smola has returned to Europe ready to race. The Czech has already stood on the second and third steps of the podium at earlier MX3 rounds so we are sure he will be looking to better those results in his home country this weekend.

WMX
Joining the MX3 in Pacov, Czech Republic, this weekend will be round five of the FIM WMX World Championship. After the last round in Matterley Basin, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Chiara Fontanesi’s winning streak was put to an end by HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane. Kane had never won a WMX World Championship overall before that day, now with the monkey off her back, we assume the charismatic Irish lady will be expecting to back it up again this weekend.

Meanwhile, Fontanesi still holds the red plate with a thirty one point cushion over Natalie Kane. Kane on the other hand, can’t rest easy as she has Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge breathing down her neck only four points back meaning with only two rounds to go, the race for second is wide open. Behind the three front runners former WMX World Champion Stephanie Laier is currently occupying fourth, twelve points behind Rutledge in third, and the rookie Dutch Nancy Van de Ven rounds out the top five in fifth.

Photos of the Czech round will be available here.

AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Round 9 Recap Virginia Mega Mile

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 28, 2013) – Round 9 of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va. last weekend marked the first time ever that the series raced on the 1.25-mile pea gravel surface. Jared Mees (Rogers Racing/Harley-Davidson) took advantage of a Bryan Smith (Crosley Radio/Kawasaki) mechanical issue on lap nine and cruised to his first victory of the 2013 season.

“I’ve had a very up-and-down season with injuries and what not,” said Mees. “More than anything I just wanted to win the race.”

For the first eight laps, it looked as if Smith would run away with his third victory of the season as he at one point controlled a very comfortable lead. Unfortunately for the Flint, Mich. product, his Kawasaki EX650 came up lame out of turn two on the ninth lap and forced him off the lead. After critical seconds had passed, Smith was indeed able to get his bike working again but it was too late. Smith was unable to make up the ground he’d lost and would go on to finish 12th, 25.362 seconds behind Mees.

“Virginia was a heartbreaker,” said Smith. “Mainly because I thought I had a really good chance to win. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, too. When I went down, one of the first people I saw pass me was Brad (Baker) and I thought to myself ‘there goes the championship’. Then when I finally got my bike running again, he went down less than 30 seconds later and it was just a crazy chain of events. I’m really looking forward to Springfield and I have a tremendous amount of confidence in my team to give me the best chance to win moving forward.”

Another notable rider to go down because of motorcycle issues was current Grand National Championship points leader Brad Baker (Dodge Bros Racing/Harley-Davidson). Baker was in serious contention with Mees for second place before Smith sputtered out and wasn’t far off the lead when he too had his motorcycle let him down. The severity of Baker’s mishap, however, proved to be much worse than Smith’s as the Eatonville, Wash. product was unable to continue racing, resulting in a catastrophic 19th place finish and putting his championship title hopes in jeopardy.

Winn, Mich.’s Henry Wiles (Lloyd Brothers Racing/Ducati) charged the field after starting all the way back on the fourth row to finish second in the main event. Wiles got a tremendous start and made his way up to the front group of riders within the race’s first few laps.

“The Ducati was running good,” said Wiles. “I got off to a great start which was a huge factor in me coming in second. I have to thank my team and the slew of guys that are behind me, I can’t thank them enough.”

Starting from ninth on the grid, Brandon Robinson (TJ Burnett Farms/Kawasaki) followed up his impressive second-place finish at the Indy Mile with a third-place effort at Colonial Downs. A combination of a little luck with Baker and Smith falling out has put Robinson back in Grand National Championship discussions as the Oxford, Pa. native now sits third in the points.

“It feels pretty good, especially after my heat crash while I was leading,” said Robinson. “It was a long race for sure. I didn’t get the best start after missing a shift but I just battled and kept pushing. Jared (Mees) and Henry (Wiles) were riding great, when I got in third position I just wanted to take it easy and land on the podium again.”

Starting from the fifth slot, Briar Bauman (Monster Energy Kawasaki/Kawasaki) edged out Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. (Harley-Davidson Motor Co./Harley-Davidson) by .009 seconds to finish fourth for his best performance this season. The Salinas, Calif. product has landed in the top five in two out of the last three main events and looks to be heating up down the homestretch. Coolbeth Jr.’s fifth-place effort was equally impressive as he did so after starting from 15th on the grid.

AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles

Luckily for Cody Johncox (Sunnyside Cycle/Yamaha), the AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles main event was 10 laps and not an inch further as the New Yorker came out on top in a three-way photo finish between himself, Shayna Texter (Crosley Radio/DFW Honda) and Stephen Vanderkuur (Parkinson Brothers Racing/Honda).

“It was great to win the first AMA Pro Flat Track main event held at Colonial Downs,” said Johncox. “I got as small as I could on the final backstretch and just prayed they didn’t draft by me.”

Despite starting the main event from 10th on the grid, Texter fought her way to the stripe to finish second and it could have just as easily been her atop the podium if the race consisted of any more laps. Texter’s runner-up performance marks her third straight finish inside the top two in mile-long races.

“I unfortunately put myself on the second row to start the main event but I was able to put my head down and go to work,” said Texter. “I came up a little bit short but it still is good for the points and I can’t thank my team enough for working their butts off all day. I was also nice to have my family in attendance for the first time in a while.”

Vanderkuur’s third-place finish lifted him to third in the point standings and the defending J&P Cycles Pro Singles champion has given himself a chance to repeat with four rounds remaining.

Jeffrey Lowery (Englehart Racing/Honda) and current J&P Cycles Pro Singles points leader Wyatt Maguire (Kirkland Racing/Yamaha) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, after the two were tangled up on the final lap. Lowery edged out Maguire by a mere .013 seconds for fourth place.

There wasn’t a lot of movement at the top of the J&P Cycles Pro Singles point standings with Maguire finishing fifth and Ryan Wells (Waters Auto Body/Honda), who currently sits in second place in the points, finished sixth on his Honda CRF450R.

Yamaha Prepare for the British Grand Prix

Courtesy of Yamaha Factory Racing

Gerno di Lesmo (Italy), 28th August 2013
The MotoGP paddock continues its relentless pace this weekend as the paddock heads from Brno in the Czech Republic to Silverstone in the UK for the third consecutive race weekend, the British Grand Prix.

The fast and flowing Silverstone track will hopefully give the best possible opportunity for Yamaha Factory Racing riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi to make the most from their YZR-M1 machines and fight for podium glory.

The British Grand Prix returned to Silverstone in 2010 having been run at Donington Park since 1987. In its three year return Lorenzo has taken two wins in the premier class, the first in 2010 and the second last year in 2012. The reigning world champion scored one 250cc win in Donington in 2006.

Rossi has yet to take a win at the Silverstone circuit but is a favourite with the British crowd having taken numerous wins at the Donington track including three premier class MotoGP wins in 2002, 2004 and 2005, two 500cc wins in 2000 and 2001, a 250cc win in 1999 and a 125cc win in 1997.

The 5.9km Silverstone circuit straddles the Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire borders and was first used for impromptu car racing in 1947. It is most famous as the home of the British Formula One Grand Prix, which was first held there in 1948 and has been contested at the track every year since 1987. Silverstone is no stranger to bike racing, with the 500cc machines having raced there from 1977 to 1986. MotoGP returned in 2010 after extensive alterations to the track including re-modelled sections and faster, sweeping corners to tailor it to the current MotoGP machines. With plenty of overtaking opportunities it is sure to provide an exciting spectacle come race day.

“In Brno maybe I expected a little bit more but at least I feel quite happy with my performance. I gave all to win the race but my competitors were in a better shape there. Now we have to finish this first triple of races at Silverstone. It is a place I like and where I used to be comfortable. The track I think is really nice, very flowing and also suits our bike. The problem in Great Britain is always the weather; it is a very challenging grand prix because of that! Despite the conditions we will try everything as usual to try to fight for the victory and cut off the distance to our rivals.”

99 Valentino Rossi

“In Brno I was hoping to go a little better and I’m glad that there is immediately the Grand Prix at Silverstone to get back on track. My team and I want to improve the bike to be able to keep the pace of the leaders. We are not far away and the Grand Prix at Silverstone will help us to understand something more. Silverstone is a very fast track and the Yamaha should be fine. We are ready to do our best. We want to move forward as soon as possible.”

“Silverstone is another track that is usually very popular. As a rider Jorge likes the track but also for the bike it is not a bad layout. Of course the weather conditions at Silverstone are always changing a lot and normally this is the key point of the weekend. Overall it is very good for us there so we’ll try to push all of these boys a little bit more. We never give up!”

Yamaha Factory Racing Massimo Meregalli
Team Director

“We go to Silverstone knowing that we must do something more. The result of the Brno Grand Prix wasn’t negative, but we want to do better. In Silverstone we want our revenge. Silverstone is a very fast track and is suitable enough to the characteristics of our bike. In the past we have had good results there so we go to England with optimism.”

More Podium Places The Aim For KRT Riders

Courtesy of Kawasaki Racing Team

WSBK, Nürburgring, Germany, 27 August 2013
Tom Sykes and Loris Baz have each recently underlined their race-winning status on the KRT Ninja ZX-10R and now they return to SBK action at the famous Nürburgring full of confidence and expectation.

More Podium Places The Aim For KRT Riders

Baz was the most recent race winner for Kawasaki, at Silverstone last time out, making that his fifth podium in SBK racing in 37 starts. The combination of Baz and Sykes has delivered six wins for Kawasaki’s official team in 2013 already.

Sykes had the first of his ten career race wins for Kawasaki, in horribly wet conditions, at the Nürburgring in 2011. Since then winning and scoring other podium finishes has become an even more regular occurrence for Tom who was the championship runner-up in 2012.

Sykes is currently only 13 points from the leading rider Sylvain Guintoli despite two challenging races at Silverstone, which saw him off the home podium on both occasions. After a long summer break in the calendar Sykes is hungry to get back into race action, to make the most of the rest of the year. The season has been cut to five remaining rounds (including Germany) after the planned finale in India in November was recently cancelled.

Baz is classified sixth in the championship right now but shares the same 180 points total as the rider in an official fifth place, who is ranked one place higher because he has scored more race wins this year than Loris.

The French rider, still only 20-years-of-age, enjoyed his summer vacation from race action by holidaying in Spain and Loris is heading to Germany to restart the hard work knowing that more podiums are possible from now until the end of the year.

SBK rider Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) heads to Germany in company with stand-in rider Mark Aitchison (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) as regular rider Alex Lundh continues his recovery from recent injuries.

Jeremy Guarnoni from the MRS Kawasaki Team is top placed Ninja ZX-10R rider in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup right now, third, with Leandro Mercado and Lorenzo Savadori fifth and sixth respectively for the Kawasaki Pedercini Team.

Tom Sykes: “I am really excited about racing again this coming weekend in Germany. I spoke to my crew chief Marcel Duinker last night and a three-week break has been good for us. I have enjoyed my time at home and with the busy month we have coming up in September I have been doing some good training in readiness for three races in quick succession. I am ready go, I feel fit and I am fully recharged. I like the circuit in Germany and the Ninja ZX-10R has been strong there in the past so I am looking forward to this weekend.”

Loris Baz: “After the win at Silverstone my confidence is really good. Races like Assen and Silverstone went really well but we knew that some other tracks in the season would not be the best for me. Now, after Silverstone, there are only good tracks coming for me. I like the Nürburgring and I have shown in the past few races that I can ride well in different conditions. I would like it to be dry, but if it is wet it is no problem for me.”
