Day 4 Nazca – Arequipa 288 km special 430 liaison
With 720 km to cover, this was the longest stage since the start of the 2013 Dakar. The route for cars and bikes was slightly different this time. It was a spectacular stage with a sandy start with dunes following one another, each one like the next in a never ending desert capable of misleading even the more expert riders. Different from the first two stages there was a mix of rocks and sands and crossing dry rivers with tricky navigation. Competitors also tackled an incredible 2 km slide downhill in the first third of the stage.
All Team HRC riders did a great job regaining valuable positions with Helder Rodrigues finishing 5th in the special and sits now 16th in the overall, climbing 12 positions.
Argentinian Javier Pizzolito continues to improve consistently and today he secured the 7th position and is now 15th the general classification After the problem suffered yesterday, Johnny Campbell gave an incredible performance, gaining positions and finishing 38th.
Helder Rodrigues SS4 5th +11’43”, 16th in the Overall: “I’m pleased with today’s stage. My bike worked well and I was able to gain valuable positions and close the gap with the front riders a little. I started 23rd and there was a lot of dust and fech fech at the beginning but then I started to push and I’m happy with the result. Tomorrow I aim to continue like this and climb some more positions in the overall standing. Dakar is a special race and many unforeseen events may happen, so it’s important to maintain the concentration and avoid mistakes, especially in the navigation”.
Javier Pizzolito SS4 7th +12’32”, 15th in the Overall: I’m very pleased with the bike, it worked very well and I was very comfortable. It was a varied stage with dunes but also rocky terrain and tricky navigation. I’m very happy with my result that allows me to gain some valuable positions in the standing. All in all it was a very good stage for me and for the team”.
Johnny Campbell SS4 38th +37’11”, 120th in the Overall: “I started at the back so I struggled with the dust, especially at the beginning. I stopped to help Pedrero who had crashed in the rocks and then I continued. I also crashed due to a hole while I was riding downhill, fortunately without serious consequences. Now my ribs are sore but I was able to finish the stage without problems”.
Tomorrow the race will leave Peru and enter Chile reaching Arica. The first bike will start at 08:30 for a 135 km special and 275 liaison.

Dakar 2013: Despres comfortable in 3rd overall and riding his own pace
Four times Dakar winner Cyril Despres of the Red Bull KTM factory team continued to ride at his own pace in Tuesday’s Stage Four on his KTM 450 Rally bike, sacrificing a few minutes to finish third in the overall standings but saving energy for the long and strenuous ride ahead.
Despres, not only an exceptional rider but also a great tactician said he had backed off a little in the stage, which gave those behind a chance to gain some time. “It’s not the first time this happens,” he said at the end of the stage. “But don’t worry about me, I’m racing my way. I’ve been riding at a high pace for three days, but not flat out, which helps me to save energy and avoid pushing the motorcycle to the limit. When you start at the back and go like crazy all day long, you ride in the dust, so if you later have mechanical problems, it won’t be down to just bad luck… The rally’s still long and I ride at my pace!”
Despres may have coasted in after the day’s ride at fifteenth place but he is only three minutes 09 behind the overall leader and feeling comfortable after what was a tough 720 km total ride in Tuesday’s stage. Organizers had planned it to be the reverse of a stage from last year’s edition and it included a tricky 2 km downhill slide in the first third of the special.
Fastest KTM factory rider in Stage Four was Despres’ support rider Ruben Faria who finished in sixth place 12:18 behind today’s stage leader Joan Barreda of Spain. Other riders from the two KTM factory teams included Jakub Przygonski in ninth, South Africa’s Riaan Van Niekerk in eleventh, American Kurt Caselli in seventeenth, Darryl Curtis of South Africa in twenty second and Joan Pedrero in twenty third. Faria is also now sixth overall 8:39 behind the leader and Przygonski is well placed at tenth with a deficit of 14:20, including a five-minute penalty.
Stage Five takes riders from Arequipa to Arica on the border with Chile over a total distance of 411 km – a liaison of 275 km and 136 km of timed special.

The Dakar got well and truly underway today with the Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain in the thick of the action. Joan Barreda, the Spanish rider won the Pisco – Pisco second stage, commanding the 242 km (151 miles) of special test.
The stage proved to be really tough, with plenty of opportunities for errors and loss of time. Barreda on his Husqvarna TE449RR by Speedbrain set an imposing pace from the start of the special test, coming in more than three minutes ahead of the nearest rival. ‘Gregarious’ Matt Fish put in a fine performance too, managing to finish among the leaders in third place. Conversely, Paulo Goncalves and Alessandro Botturi lost a lot of time in seach of the correct route some 100 km into the race.
Now Joan Barreda is leading the provisional overall standings with 5’36” on Ruben Faria. Tomorrow sees the third stage at Pisco Nazca, a 343 km run (214 miles) of which 243 km is special test.
Joan Barreda: “A really tough stage, but I’m really pleased with the way I raced. By the time we were 100 km into the race, I was in command and I set my own pace to the finish line. I wanted to get away fast and that’s what I did. The bike is perfect and the team are doing a great job.”
Matt Fish: ”There was such a lot of dust and navigation but I’m happy with the result. I’m under orders from the team, and it’s important to be a help to my team-mates. I’m really glad to have got my first podium place in a stage of the Dakar.”
Paulo Goncalves: “A really tricky stage. So many of us got lost and it was impossible to make up the time. The way point wasn’t easy to find. Then the dust from the group was too heavy to really force things, so I tried to hold back a bit.”
Alessandro Botturi: “I was alongside Paulo the whole way and we had a lot of trouble finding the correct route. We really lost too much time. Tomorrow I’ll be starting from behind but I’ll try and make up some time.”
