TEAHUPO’O, Tahiti (Thursday, August 15, 2013) – The Billabong Pro Tahiti, Event No. 6 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), completed Round 1 and the opening four heats of Round 2 today, with the world’s best surfers taking on racy three-to-five foot (1.5 metre) barrels at Teahupo’o.
John John Florence (HAW), 20, current ASP WCT No. 14, continued his impressive return to form today, putting in a dominant performance in a relatively wave-starved heat. The Hawaiian prodigy opened his Tahitian campaign with an excellent 9.07 barrel ride, quickly followed with a 7.50 for three ferocious backhand turns. Florence’s success left Julian Wilson (AUS), 24, and Miguel Pupo (BRA), 21, in need of a combination of scores at the end of the heat.

“Waves were pretty fun, better than I thought it was going to be,” Florence said. “There’s a weird wind chop on it. The other heats were more consistent and had the double-ups and I got that one 9. I was able to get a backup and do a couple of turns, so I’m stoked. Tahiti is always fun and always beautiful. Happy to be here.”

Joel Parkinson (AUS), 32, reigning ASP World Champion, was another to capitalize on recent momentum (following a win in Bali) and got the best of a high-scoring Round 1 affair this morning compliments of technical backside tuberiding. The Australian would best Kolohe Andino (USA), 19, and Anthony Walsh (AUS), 30, despite a perfect 10 point ride from the wildcard to earn the win.

“I thought it was going to be a battle,” Parkinson said. “I didn’t think my two 8s were going to be enough and then it slowed down. The swell isn’t completely here yet and there will be a quick flurry and then the waves will slow down. I’ve got a couple of good boards and I’d love for nothing more than some good waves.”

Kelly Slater (USA), 41, 11-time ASP World Champion and four-time Billabong Pro Tahiti winner, was on the back foot for the majority of his Round 1 heat this morning until the dying moments of the bout. However, with seconds on the clock, the current ASP WCT No. 2 drove through a deep backhand tube, earning an 8.50 for the ride and a position in Round 3.

“I was kind of lucky that one even came in the end,” Slater said. “I blew the best wave of the heat and lost my fins. I had the line I wanted and just lost my fins on the foam-ball and was too far behind to catch up. Brett (Simpson) had a few opportunities and paddled too wide. My waves weren’t that great and I was just trying to make things happen.”

Jordy Smith (ZAF), 25, current ASP World No. 4, got off to a quick start in his Round 1 heat, dominating his affair from start-to-finish. The powerful South African would best fellow countryman Travis Logie (ZAF), 34, and trials winner Alain Riou (PYF), 30, compliments of a rare righthander and a racy left barrel to secure a spot directly in to Round 3.

“The swell is really west today and if you have that opportunity, you can go right,” Smith said. “I thought that one would be my highest score. I was pumped. In the beginning I waited for priority and lucked in to an 8.10 and that set me up for the heat right there.”

Smith has admittedly struggled to find a result at the Billabong Pro Tahiti throughout his budding career, but hopes his experience at Teahupo’o over the years will help him earn a top result in 2013.

“I’ve always had one good wave in a heat and always come up against wildcards and that’s a tough thing out here,” Smith said. “I think I’ve chosen the wrong waves in the past as well. I really want to do well, especially in the Pacific leg. I’m taking my time and watching the best guys out here.”

Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), 31, navigated the tight Teahupo’o tubes with incredible prowess, besting defending event champion and current ASP WCT No. 1 Mick Fanning (AUS), 32, and dangerous wildcard Jocelyn Poulou (PYF).

“I always feel pretty comfortable out here,” Patacchia said. “We don’t have the best surf today, but we’re still getting barreled, so it’s fun. I’ve been surfing against Mick (Fanning) a lot and surfing against him makes me surf better and surf smarter heats. I feel like my level of surfing is getting better because I’ve been competing against him.”

Fanning would go on to post a Round 2 win over Poulou this afternoon, advancing through to Round 3 of competition.

Yadin Nicol (AUS), 27, ASP Top 34 replacement surfer, issued a big upset today, relegating local favorite Michel Bourez (PYF), 27, to Round 2 with a near-perfect 9.07 earned for a critical drop and deep barrel in the final minutes of their clash.

“It’s kind of onshore out there, so at the start I thought I might have to do some turns,” Nicol said. “We had a weird priority call at the start that went in to my favor and I seemed to have priority on the last wave of the set. Most of the waves I got were bad, but it just turned out in my favor with that last wave at the end. That one hit the ledge at the end and I had to go. I pushed myself over the ledge and squeaked through, so I’m stoked!”

Kieren Perrow (AUS), 36, veteran elite tour contender, rebounded from a horrific wipeout on his opening wave this morning to recover and earn the day’s high heat total of 16.60 out of 20 with two excellent barrels.

“I had a shocker to start,” Perrow said. “I didn’t know what was going on and I couldn’t set my line properly. I was just trying to take off deep and head slapped pretty hard when I hit the water. It was one where you had a headache right away. I had to reset after that. I started with a 7.67 and was only chasing a low score, but you really can’t chase a small score out there. I was waiting for a good bomb and that one came.”

The end of the day was not without upsets, however, as wildcards Ian Walsh (HAW), 30,  Anthony Walsh (AUS), 30, and Alain Riou (PYF), 30, eliminated top seeds Taj Burrow (AUS), 35, Nat Young (USA), 22, and Adriano de Souza (BRA), 26, in Round 2 of competition.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 7am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be Michel Bourez (PYF), 28, against wildcard Nathan Hedge (AUS), 34, in Heat 5 of Round 2.

TEAHUPO’O, Tahiti (Wednesday, August 14, 2013) – The world’s best surfers will resume this season’s hunt for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Title this week at Stop No. 6 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the Billabong Pro Tahiti, held at the world-famous, lefthand reed pass of Teahupo’o from August 15 – 26.
Commencing the second half of the 2013 ASP WCT season, the Billabong Pro Tahiti will reignite this year’s battle for surfing supremacy and two-time ASP World Champion (2007, 2009) and defending event winner Mick Fanning (AUS), 32, leads the ASP Top 34 as the current frontrunner.

“Tahiti is a place where I have put a lot of focus on in my career,” Fanning said. “When I first started out on tour, my forehand was definitely stronger than my backhand and I made it a point to come to place like Teahupo’o in my free time to build a stronger backhand tube-riding approach. I’ve had some pretty solid results in Tahiti since and last year’s win was definitely special.”

Kelly Slater (USA), 41, 11-time ASP World Champion and four time Tahiti winner, opened up 2013 with a big win on the Gold Coast and backed it up with a tour de force performance in Fiji, but stumbles at Bells Beach and Bali have the iconic athlete currently trailing Fanning heading into Tahiti.

Joel Parkinson (AUS), 32, reigning ASP World Champion and current ASP WCT No. 3, had an uncharacteristic slow start to the 2013 season, but rebounded in fantastic form with a win at the previous event in Bali. Runner-up to stablemate Fanning in the last year’s Billabong Pro Tahiti, the champ is hungry to improve upon the result in the coming weeks.

“When I look back at last year’s Teahupo’o event, it kills me,” Parkinson said. “I felt like I did everything right that I needed to do and it just crushed me to come so close and get second. My one goal moving ahead is to win Teahupo’o.”

Surfline, official forecasters for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, are calling for:

A modest, mid period SW swell will build in Thursday before easing slowly on Friday. A smaller SW swell is possible for Sunday, with a series of small to modest SW to S swells possible for the last few days of the waiting period.

Withdraws from the event include Owen Wright (AUS), Glenn Hall (IRL), Tiago Pires (PRT), Dusty Payne (HAW) and Raoni Monteiro (BRA).

The two event wildcards as determined by the Trials are are Alain Riou (PYF) and Anthony Walsh (AUS).

The two ASP Replacements due to event withdrawals are Patrick Gudauskas (USA) and Yadin Nicol (AUS).

The three event replacements due to withdrawals are Nathan Hedge (AUS), Jocelyn Poulou (PYF) and Ian Walsh (HAW).

Selection for the event wildcards and replacements was based on the Trials’ results.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Sunday, July 28, 2013) – Alejo Muniz (BRA), 23, has won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Vans US Open of Surfing over Kolohe Andino (USA), 19, in peaky one-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Huntington Beach Pier.

The Vans US Open of Surfing is the fourth of eight ASP Prime events on the 2013 calendar, offering crucial points towards surfers’ ASP World Ranking and a coveted US$100,000 first place prize purse.

Muniz would get the best of an opening exchange with Andino, belting a 8.43 for a series of seamless frontside turns. The Brazilian would quickly backup the ride on his backhand, scalping a 7.80 on a left breaking in to the pier to solidify the victory.

“I’m so happy, I can’t believe it,” Muniz said. “Today marks the four-year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing and I’d like to dedicate this win to him. This is the biggest win of my career and it’s the biggest crowd I’ve ever surfed in front of. I knew I had to get scores and the waves were dying a little bit with the high tide and the ocean really cooperated with me today.”

Muniz, who entered the Vans US Open ranked No. 24, had struggled to find a big result throughout the first half of his ASP season, but vaults to No. 15 on the rankings compliments of his win in Huntington Beach today.

“I’ve been really focused because I hadn’t really had big results coming in to this event,” Muniz said. “I was putting everything in to this event and the work paid off. I focused more on myself rather than who I was surfing against and what scores they were getting. I’ve been getting good scores, but losing heats for some reason. I knew inside that I just needed to get the good waves and surf how I could. I’m stoked that I was able to do it this week. I think I surfed smart all week and it’s been amazing.”

Kolohe Andino was the last Southern Californian remaining in men’s competition and was in dangerous form entering the final. The progressive regular-footer would open his final exchange with a 7.77 but was unable to find the second score needed to surpass Muniz, finishing runner-up overall.

“Congratulations to Alejo,” Andino said. “He surfed amazing all week. It would have been nice to win, but I just couldn’t find a second wave and I’m happy that I made the final.”

Bede Durbidge (AUS), 31, unloaded signature power-surfing throughout Vans US Open, besting fellow ASP WCT standout Michel Bourez (PYF), 27, while advancing to the Semifinals. The Australian was unable to surpass Andino in the Semifinals, but hopes to take his success in Huntington Beach to the back half of the year.

“Not many people would have picked me to make the Semifinals in this event so it was a good result for me,” Durbidge said. “I came over here to just get back to winning heats and I got four or five wins under my belt and I’ll just take that momentum in to the back half of the year.”

Matt Banting (AUS), 18, proved to be darkhorse of the 2013 Vans US Open of Surfing, besting a flock of the world’s best surfers on his way to an incredible equal 3rd place finish. Banting went on to eliminate Jordy Smith (ZAF), 25, in the Quarterfinals, but was unable to surpass Muniz in their Semifinals clash. Banting’s result launches him from from 92 to 41 on the men’s ASP World Ranking.

“I’ve dreamt of that heat against Jordy (Smith) my whole life and to surf against him and to beat him, I’m so happy,” Banting said following his Quarterfinals win. “I was just wishing that no waves would come and to just better that 3.77 on my final wave. I’m just frothing. I’m not trying to qualify just yet. I’m taking it heat-by-heat and to beat Jordy, anything after that would have been a bonus.”

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Sunday, July 28, 2013) – Carissa Moore (HAW), 20, has won the Vans US Open of Surfing over local favorite Courtney Conlogue (USA), 20, in peaky one-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at Huntington Beach Pier, taking the No. 1 position on the ASP Women’s World Title Race.

Stop No. 6 of 8 on the 2013 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT), the Vans US Open of Surfing plays both a crucial role in deciding the 2013 Women’s World Champion and qualification for next season’s ASP Top 17.

Moore got off to a dominant start in her final clash, earning an 8.17 and 7.83 to launch out to an early lead. The talented Hawaiian would hold on to the win despite a late-heat rampage from Conlogue, solidifying her third ASP Women’s WCT event win this year.

“To be honest I’m a little shocked right now because I thought Courtney (Conlogue) won when the crowd erupted on that last wave,” Moore said. “I let her go and I had priority and it was a bad decision, but I’m stoked that it worked out in my favor. I was happy to be in the final and Courtney’s in the title race and I had fun, but I was definitely nervous at the end of that heat. It’s such an honor to win this event in front of this big crowd. I feel amazing!”

Conlogue put in an amazing showing in front of her hometown crowd, besting then ratings’ leader Tyler Wright (AUS), 19, in the Semifinals. The regular-footer would fight hard to surpass Moore in the back half of the heat with her best two rides coming in the last five minutes. Unfortunately for the Californian, she was unable to surpass Moore’s opening heat efforts, finishing runner-up overall.

“It was definitely an amazing heat and Carissa (Moore), she’s been surfing really well,” Conlogue said. “With everyone screaming and the crowd on the pier I was definitely wanting to win. I was trying to be progressive and surfing the best that I could.”

Conlogue, who now sits at No 3 on the ASP Women’s WCT, is hoping to carry her momentum in to the final two events of the season in an attempt to rally for the 2013 ASP Women’s World Title.

“It feels really good to get second and I’m looking forward to going back to Europe,” Conlogue said. “Going to Hossegor is going to be exciting so it’s nice to get a result here and I’m looking forward to it.”

Tyler Wright (AUS), 19, was dominant throughout the Vans US Open of Surfing, earning her career-best result in Huntington Beach. The talented Australian’s run would end in the Semifinals, as she was stopped short by in-form local Courtney Conlogue, finishing equal 3rd overall.

“I did the best I could with what I had out there and Courtney (Conlogue) caught the best waves,” Wright said. “A 3rd is the best result I’ve ever had here at the US Open and I’m happy with that.”

Pauline Ado (FRA), 22, matched her career-best result and crucial points towards her requalification campaign with an equal 3rd place finish. Ado put in a stellar performance throughout the Vans US Open of Surfing, but was unable to surpass Moore in their Semifinals heat. Ado now sits No. 10 among the ASP Top 17 due to her efforts.

I’m a bit disappointed with my heat today,” Ado said. “I couldn’t find any good waves and feel like I didn’t surf my best, but I’m stoked on the result overall. I’ve had a great week at this event and a 3rd is putting me in a better position before the last two events in Europe.”
