Telo Island Lodge

Telo Island Lodge has two world-class waves on its doorstep. There are 18 more breaks within an hour’s boat ride, with the majority less than 20 minutes away. Even by Indonesia’s standards, this is extraordinary. The maximum guest capacity is limited to eight, and they have an industry-best guest-to-guide ratio of 4:1. Telo Island Lodge provides one of the world’s foremost, best-serviced, surf travel experiences. They firmly tick ALL the boxes – the coldest beer, the best food, the most enjoyable waves, the most comfortable beds, the coolest bedrooms, the fastest, most comfortable transfer boat, the best safety protocols, the most experienced and friendly guides. Situated lagoon-side in a protected pocket at the base of a small mountain, Telo Island Lodge overlooks Max’s Right – a gem of a wave, which provides an ever-changing outlook for its guests. The lodge itself is an open-plan, post-and-beam construction, fusing local North Sumatran architecture with western ideas. Spacious undercover decks and common areas are surrounded by manicured lawns and a tropical lagoon, where state-of-the-art surf transfer speedboats stand by.

Maldives – Hudhuranfushi Resortt

There are not too many resorts in the world with a world-class wave within walking distance from your room. Lohis Left is an ultra-consistent reef break that is highly regarded as the best left in the Maldives. A down-the-line wave that gives you a high speed ride from take-off to the end section.

Hudhuranfushi Resort is a mid-range multi-facility resort, perfect for surfing couples, honeymooners, families or the boys looking to kick back after a boat trip. There are not too many resorts in the world with a world-class wave within walking distance from your room. Lohis is widely regarded as the best left in the Maldives, not only is it super consistent and surf-able in any swell/wind/tide combination, but it is also good at any size, from 2ft to 6ft, and has multiple take off areas to spread out the guests. It’s hard to imagine a better set up so close to your room. Under the surfer management plan, you will be one of only 45 surfers with access to Lohi’s left. Less people in the water will mean more waves for you, but with only 45 passes available at any one time, you must act now.

Alternative New Year’s resolutions

Competitors pose for portraits prior to Red Bull Queen Of The Bay at Waimea Bay in Haleiwa, HI, USA in October 2017. –

Looking for a new activity to tackle in 2018? We have the answer.

Bored of the traditional gym and looking for another way to keep fit and healthy in 2018? We offer up some alternative New Year’s Resolutions to keep active in the year ahead…

Cycling
It’s as easy as riding a bike, so goes the expression, but the world’s your oyster on what two-wheel format you want to tackle. There’s the extreme from Red Bull Last Stand in which a rider is eliminated after each lap to the ridiculous with Red Bull Trans-Siberian Extreme, where riders travel gargantuan distances. Or if mountain biking’s more your thing, why not let the likes of Rachel and Gee Atherton hunt you down in the Red Bull Foxhunt.

Running
All you need are a pair of trainers and off you go. Wings for Life World Run takes place all over the globe, your entry fee going towards the non-for-profit foundation Wings for Life. It occurs at the same time all over the world come May until one runner is left standing and declared the winner. If that’s not ambitious enough, what about running up the steepest ski jumps in the world for Red Bull 400?

Trail and mountain running
If you’re done with running on the roads, you could turn your attention to the trails and climbs, testing out how level your footing is on tougher terrains. For one, there’s Red Bull Steeplechase in the UK which starts with 500 runners of varying ability and ending with just 20 for the final part of the 23-mile route. Or else you can run 3,000 metres vertically in the Italian Alps for Red Bull K3.

Climbing
We probably wouldn’t suggest you immediately follow the pros on outdoor rock faces; probably best to start indoors to get to grips of the discipline. Indoors, earlier in 2017, climbers were given the chance to climb with Briton Shauna Coxsey with your best dyno, or dynamic move, on the climbing wall. Meanwhile, other competitions on the horizon include the Tokyo-based Red Bull Asura.

Surfing
If water’s your thing, there’s no shortage of options. Why not pick up a board, and test yourself on the waves – even as a first timer? It might take a lifetime of work on the water to get up to the speed of the pros tackling Red Bull Night Riders or else Red Bull Queen of the Bay. Or alternatively, just sit back and watch reruns of Mick Fanning dancing on his board under the Northern Lights.

SUP
Casper Steinfath was the winner of this year’s Red Bull Heavy Water. Ok, you might not quite be up to the speed to tackle an event described as the “most intense stand-up paddling event in the world” but it might be one to aspire to in the future.

Dancing
It’s not necessarily traditional sport but dancers are some of the fittest athletes in the world from the more traditional moves to the breakdancing of the B-boys. The two worlds collide with Red Bull Flying Bach. Or if that all seems to much, you could strut your stuff at a music festival be it Primavera or Roskilde.

Parkour
Again, not a traditional sporting playground but Jason Paul is proof you can start from scratch and become among the world’s best in parkour or freerunning. Paul only got into the sport by default in 2005 when he and a friend started watching YouTube clips. From Gaza to Santorini, there’s no shortage of people bitten by the parkour bug.

Mind Gamers
If your preference is to keep an active mind rather than body, tackling the Mind Gamers route might be the way to go. One of the fastest growing genres, there’s a myriad of options, including the Escape Room World Championships.

Back to Argentina

When the news broke that Neuquén in Argentina was going to open the 2018 MXGP season, riders, mechanics the media and a lot of fans were excited. The MXGP of Patagonia – Argentina has been one of the highlights for the series, and we decided to ask some riders their experiences of the event.

Defending World MXGP champion Antonio Cairoli loved the circuit on his first visit in 2016. He enjoyed the layout, and the atmosphere with the large crowd and fast action.

“The track is beautiful,” Cairoli said. “It is very fun to ride, and there are several points where you can try overtaking, without taking big risks. There are many lines and that’s good for the sport, so the spectators from home can see some good races; this is a safe and spectacular track. The weekend (last year) was very difficult mainly because of the starts and also the riders were very close together on this track, and you could not make the difference; you had to take some risks to pass the others.”

Former MX2 and MXGP champion Tim Gajser loved it last year, and took victory at the circuit. Always performing well on circuits like in Argentina.

“I really enjoy the track,” Gajser said. “I know I was riding well (last year). The crowds here were good and it was nice to hear them cheering when I came past them on the last lap. They had made a few changes to the track last year which suited me.”

});

GP veteran and multiple GP winner Shaun Simpson always has difficulties working out what set-up to have, as the dirt changes each year. He does love the country of Argentina and looks forward to going back.

“Argentina,” Simpson said. “It is always one of those where you are never sure what type of tire to put on. It is just a soil that nobody is used to riding on, which creates a bit of uncertainty. It is probably the most unpredictable start to a season we have had in a while for set-up. You can go there and think you have a good set-up and still be searching for a good set-up in the first couple of sessions. It is one I will be looking forward to. It is always well organized, and everybody loves going there. It also has a good atmosphere.”

Of course, come March 4, when the best motocross riders in the world attempt to start their season with as many points as possible, the world will be watching. Of course, it might be names like Cairoli, Gajser and Simpson who will be in the points, but in a series as tough as the MXGP series, anything is possible.
