Valentin Delluc flies through the night by the light of the full moon.

A full moon currently fills the night skies as was the case when Valentin Delluc created a night-time glow of his own, taking to the skies like a firefly.

The Frenchman once more combined his two passions of skiing and flying but this time with a canopy lit up by the moon and the LED attached to his wing.

The 25-year-old breathtakingly lit up the night sky and the glacier of Bossons in the ski resort of Chamonix in his native France below him.

The film, Moonline, plotted his course as he skied over powder, took off through the skies and even arced his skis over the tops of chalet rooves.

Plotting for the ambitious night flight began all the way back in December 2016 with test flights near Morzine and Avoriaz, the challenges being the wing behaving differently at altitude and getting to grips with the added weight of the LED ribbon on board.

But when it came to the actual filming, he had just one attempt at the flight to get it just right, Delluc understandably delighted as he touched down on the ground at the end of a visually hypnotic journey.

The flight – back on March 16 under a full moon – was a world first in terms of flying and manoeuvring at night in a high-mountain environment, for what was undoubtedly a risky undertaking.

With the help of a guide, a cameraman in the air and another on the ground, the team took the last cable car of the day up at 4pm, reached Aiguille du Midi before skiing to the 3,600-metre high take-off point at Col du Midi.

But take-off was delayed until 3.45am with the full moon’s luminosity at its very strongest.

The one great danger, though, was an LED failure plunging Delluc and his adventure into darkness bar a head lamp, but he avoided any mishaps to land safely at the end of his voyage.
