Luke Mossey – Assen Circuit

Luke Mossey and the Quattro Plant TECcare Kawasaki team had a varied weekend at round ten of the MCE British Superbike Championship at Assen Circuit this weekend. The 22-year-old had a technical problem in race one and was forced to retire but he then went on to clinch a fantastic third place in race two.
The likeable rider was keen to get to the fast and flowing Assen Circuit and his times in practice were looking strong for two good results in the Superbike races. The weather over the weekend at the Dutch Circuit caused a number of problems for everyone. Luke managed to get through to the final stages of the qualifying session and was looking strong until a small damp patch caught him out and he crashed out. He was still able to qualify in seventh place for the opening race on Sunday morning.
After the crash on Saturday the team found a problem with one of the front forks and they made changes to the bike which drastically changed the handling on his Kawasaki for race one. He got a good start but his times were dropping off as were his positions. The team also took a gamble and opted for the harder compound SC1 tyre and from the off Luke was struggling from the off-set and after a run off track into the gravel he was forced to retire to the pits.
The Quattro Plant Teccare Kawasaki team worked hard between races to ensure they found a good set-up for Luke for the second race. He dropped back to 13th place on the grid for race two and after numerous delays due to rainfall the race was finally declared a wet race.
Assen is renowned to dry quickly and with plenty of heat in the tarmac the majority of the grid choose full slick dry tyres. Luke got a good start and was up to ninth after the opening lap but the young Superbike Rookie was on a mission and a fantastic move at the end of lap three saw him move up to fourth place. The track was drying fast and on lap six Luke lead the race for a brief time. He was then battling with showdown contenders Josh Brookes and James Ellison for a podium place. He made a small mistake on lap nine which dropped him to fourth but he fought back to third and held off Richard Cooper and Shane Byrne to the chequered flag.
Luke Mossey – “Well it was a bit of a mixed weekend at Assen. I was really looking forward to getting there as it is one of my favourite circuits. I felt really comfortable from the start of the weekend and my times were good. Qualifying was going well until I hit a bit of damp track and down I went.
Whilst re-building the bike on Saturday night they found a problem with the left front fork and they made some changes and when it came to race one I felt like I was on a different bike. I tried my best to continue but didn’t want to risk crashing again so I pulled into the pits.
The team did a massive turn around for race two and I really wanted to go home with a good result under my belt. I was a bit further back on the grid and the first few laps were more than sketchy as part of the track was wet and part bone dry so it made things very difficult with everyone fighting for the same bit of dry tarmac.
I definitely made some moves and was determined to get through the pack and knew I’d have to do it fairly early on before people started to break away. There were times I did think, I hope this works! When I got to the front it was a great feeling and I felt really comfortable on the bike. I knew I’d have to fight for a podium but to get a podium here, well I’m speechless and so pleased.
The team worked so hard for me this weekend and it’s great I can re-pay them with a podium. A huge thank you to all my personal sponsors especially Teccare and also my Dad for his continued support with everything. Silverstone next, I can’t wait!”
