Joe Collier, racing on the Haribo Starmix Triumph, was crowned 2015 Motorpoint British Supersport Evo Champion this weekend at Assen Circuit. Despite struggling at an unknown track over the weekend the seventh and third place he secured clinched him the Evo Championship title.
Joe has never been to Assen before so he was forced to try and learn the track quickly on Friday but the rain had other ideas though. Joe was cautious on Friday morning and was learning the technical GP track, the rain came down heavily on Friday afternoon and he was only able to complete three laps.
Struggling throughout the weekend Joe was only able to qualify in 29th place for the opening Sprint race on Saturday. Knowing he had a lot of work to do over the 12-lap race, he got a steady start and was 17th Evo rider after lap one. As his knowledge of the track improved during the race so did his times and he was soon working his way through the field to secure a seventh place overall.
He moved up the grid for the second race by 10 places up to 19th and this gave Joe a bit more chance of a better result. After a short delay due to weather conditions the race was declared dry and cut short to 13-laps. The safety car was deployed early on for several laps and Joe managed to get a good tow on the re-start. He worked hard and knuckled down and on the final lap gained third place and that secured him the Evo Championship title for 2015.
Joe Collier – “It was really tough coming here and into the unknown this weekend at Assen. I have obviously watched it on the TV many times but riding it was totally different and quite blind. I was taking corners all wrong and just not settling into a rhythm correctly and so I had a pretty shocking weekend, probably the worst this season.
As the weekend went on my knowledge on where to go got better and at one stage we thought about attaching a sat nav to the bike to help me get round! Despite this I’ve managed to become 2015 Evo Champion and it’s a great feeling, I’m totally speechless.
I must thank all my personal sponsors, listed below for their help and support this year. Plus a huge thank you to the Haribo team, Tony, James and Derek, Kev Gillespie my trainer, Mollie and the biggest thanks of all goes to my amazing Mum and Dad for making this happen. They have all put in many hours of work and money this season to help me and thankfully it’s now paid off.”
