Carve Pro Maroubra to Kick off 2017 Australia / Oceania Qualifying Series Season
Location:    Maroubra Beach, Sydney NSW, Australia
Event: Carve Pro QS1,000
Conditions: Upcoming

Coolangatta, QLD/AUS (Wednesday, January 18, 2017) –  The Carve Pro will once again call Maroubra home when the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 event kicks off on the Eastern Sydney beach tomorrow.

The elite four-day competition is the first WSL QS event on the Australia / Oceania calendar. The event will play host to 200 of Australia’s and the world’s most promising male and female surfers.  All competitors will be hoping to get their 2017 competitive seasons off to a good start.

Fresh from becoming the Women’s World Junior Champion (WJC), Central Coaster Macy Callaghan comes into the Carve Pro as No.2 seed. Although Callaghan took out the WJC in devastating fashion, the 16-year-old is all too aware that QS events are a totally different kettle of fish.

“These QS1,000 events are super important to me,” Callaghan said. “It gives me a chance to surf against the older girls who have more experience which is a great warm up for the major QS events in the coming months. It’s been really crazy since the WJC wrapped up. My friends and family have been a great support while I’ve been taking it all in. I’m looking forward to Maroubra where I can get back out there and keep competing.”

Newcastle ripper Jackson Baker had a break through year on the QS in 2017 stringing together a number of finals finishes and even a win in Japan at the Yumeya Surfing Games Tahara Pro QS1,000. Baker is familiar with the beach break peaks of Maroubra and will look to use this experience as he aims for a win to kick of 2017.

“I’m feeling good coming into the Carve Pro,” Baker said. “I’ve been training really hard over the off season and have a big year ahead so I’m hoping for a big result at Maroubra. I’ve been competing in events at Maroubra since I was 9-year-old so I have good experience there. I’m hoping to get a win and start off my 2017 with a bang.”

Young Maroubra local, Max McGuigan, was awarded a sponsors wildcard into the event by Carve. At only 16-years-of-age, McGuigan is excited at the prospect of sharing his local break with some of the world’s best. “The Carve Pro is such a good event for the Maroubra area” said McGuigan.

“Since it’s upgrade from a Pro Junior event, it has become one event that every single local wants to take out. I hope we can all put on a decent show and the waves turn up for us.”

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres is a massive supporter of the Carve Pro as he knows its importance to the local community.

“The Carve Pro is a great local event for Maroubra, bringing some of Australia’s and the world’s best surfers to Sydney” Ayres said. “It’s great for local surfing fans and it’s great for local businesses too – the 2017 NSW Pro Surf Series will contribute over $1.8 million to the NSW economy in visitor spend, attracting 1,000 overnight visitors to the four event locations.”

For more information head to www.WorldSurfLeague.com or check out the WSL app. The event will also be webcast live at the locations on the 21st and 22nd of January.

The 2017 Carve Pro Maroubra QS1,000 will run from January 19 -22. It will be broadcast live at www.worldsurfleague.com and on the WSL App. The event will form the first of four stops on the Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series. The Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series was developed for Australian and International surfers to gain ranking points and prize money on the WSL Qualifying Series. The Series also creates a NSW coastal road trip for all to explore the variety of waves, visit local communities and enjoy NSW surfing culture.

The 2017 Vissla NSW Pro Surf Series will be proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. The series will also be proudly supported by Vissla, Randwick City Council, Central Coast Council, Destination Tweed, Great Lakes Council and Tourism, NBN, Toyota, Surfing Life Magazine, World Surf League and Surfing NSW. #visslanswprosurfseries

Standout pilots from Chile and France join 2017 Red Bull Air Race World Championship

Cristian Bolton of Chile poses for a photograph prior to the seventh stage of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States on September 28, 2016.

Two top international pilots, Cristian Bolton of Chile and Mikael “Mika” Brageot of France, will join the exclusive lineup contending for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in 2017. The action will take off in February as the season opener in Abu Dhabi celebrates a landmark 75th race.

Salzburg, (Austria) – Looking to shake up the standings in 2017’s Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be two new Master Class pilots with exceptional experience in high-speed, low-altitude flying: Cristian Bolton of Chile and Mikael “Mika” Brageot of France. At eight stops in seven countries, Cristian Bolton Racing and Brageot’s Breitling Racing Team will face off against 12 other top teams to earn points toward the official World Championship sanctioned by the global governing body, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

Juan Velarde of Spain prepares for his flight during the seventh stage of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States on October 2, 2016.

Both of the newcomers hold the required Master Class Super License and have previously earned season podiums in the Challenger Class, an element of the Red Bull Air Race that gives the next generation of pilots the chance to develop their skills in actual racing conditions. Bolton marked a motorsport first when he competed in the final two Master Class races of 2016 (Indianapolis and Las Vegas, USA) as a standby pilot, making him the first ever from Chile to fly for World Championship points. The former Lieutenant Colonel in the Chilean Air Force is thrilled to now be confirmed as an official member of the Master Class going forward.
“We are really excited for 2017, though you might say that for us, our season started back in Indianapolis, because everything since then has been a good learning curve,” says Bolton, who in addition to racing is ranked as Chile’s top aerobatic pilot by the FAI and is one of the leading aerobatic performers in all of Latin America. “The way we look at it, our ‘warm-up’ races are over, and now we are focused to continue learning and win races! We are a great team and fully dedicated to eventually becoming the best, and to be the fastest adversary possible to the other teams at every race.”

Petr Kopfstein of the Czech Republic prepares for his flight during the seventh stage of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States on October 2, 2016.

Brageot, who was 2015’s Challenger Cup champion, also has valuable experience flying a Master Class raceplane, thanks to his pioneering participation in the Master Mentoring Program. Introduced in 2016, it enabled him to benefit from firsthand mentoring by former World Champion Nigel Lamb in the British pilot’s final season before retirement – including training flights in Lamb’s high-performance MXS-R through the series’ racetracks worldwide.
“I was right there, backstage, so to speak, and able to watch the whole Master Class team process. I learned a lot, race after race,” explains Brageot, who has a stellar background as a gold-medal-winning pilot at the highest level of aerobatic competition. “I would really like to give the best first impression that I can at the season opener. My other objective is to keep learning, until someday, hopefully, I win the Red Bull Air Race World Championship.
Bolton, Brageot and the entire Master Class field – including reigning champion Matthias Dolderer of Germany – will kick off their quest for the 2017 Red Bull Air Race title as the season opener in Abu Dhabi celebrates the landmark 75th World Championship race on 10-11 February 2017.

Francois Le Vot of France prepares for his flight during the qualifying of the seventh stage of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States on October 1, 2016.

Husky Young Guns

Due to a major arm injury Rasmus Jorgensen might not have done what he hoped for in his own career, but a move to the powerful Husqvarna MX2 Factory team as riding coach has given him something to look forward to.

At just 25 years old himself, and with 19-year-old Thomas Kjer Olsen, 20-year-old Thomas Covington (turns 21 next week), and 17-year-old Conrad Mewse under his wing, the likeable Dane is getting a lot of pleasure from his new role.

“It all started with me working with Thomas Kjer Olsen,” Jorgensen said. “Training and being with him all the time, also helping him get a ride for last year. When I started he pretty much had nothing, we had to find him a ride for 2016, but it all worked out in the end and he got a factory ride with Husqvarna. I have a pretty good relationship with Robert Jonass, so that helped. Through Robert and getting the deal done with Thomas, they asked me if I liked to be part of the team as riding coach. To be somebody who is always there, and the riders can trust, going cycling with them, going running with them, going to the gym with them, going on the track with them. Just to coach them as much as possible.

For Olsen, the development of his relationship with Jorgensen has given him some great opportunities in his young career.

“Yes, for sure, it’s been a great relationship so far,” Olsen said. “It started out with Rasmus not riding anymore, and he started coaching a little bit. I was kind of struggling at that time and I knew I needed to make a change and I needed a coach, and when I had the opportunity with Rasmus, it was like I knew I had to do it. It was either keep riding the way I was riding, or make a chance, and he really helped me with my training program and everything, and we get along really good. We haven’t had any bad moments and we have been together a lot, so it’s going really good.”

When you see other rider like Tim Gajser or Romain Febvre, who also won titles in the EMX, it appears if you can get an EMX title it really shows your talent and helps get to the next level. For Olsen who won the 2016 EMX 250 championship the chance to move up to MX2 was an obvious one and it needed to be done quickly.

“It isn’t like you are good in the euros and it just happens in the MX2 or MXGP. You still have to put in the work, and you see it with those guys mentioned, they put in a lot of work. I am on the right track, but I need to keep working hard and keep doing what I am doing. Sometimes I do look back, and I had the same team as Febvre, with Bodo Schmidt, and now I am with Husqvarna, so I am on the same road as him, but I am trying to keep my head down, and in this sport, it can go wrong so easily. I am just trying to follow my training and do the best I can.”

British rider Conrad Mewse is more than happy to be in such a young team, and knows it will only help him as all three try and boost their careers. Having his first full MX2 season means he needs to learn a lot, and he is ready for that.

“I have some really good guys to go training with every week. Coming into the team as the youngest, you have the least expectations and takes a bit of the pressure off me, so it’s good like that. I am riding with two really top guys and they are both riding great and I didn’t expect anything else really. Thomas Olsen is European champion and he will be fast and Thomas Covington has some experience in the class and he will be up there. It’s really good practicing with these guys, because they are two of the top guys in the class. We all push each other and I hope it shows in the first few rounds.”

Now onto Qatar where the three young Husqvarna riders will do their best to put the blue and white machines on the podium.

SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks feature identically prepared trucks, which are made to resemble their scaled-down TRAXXAS radio-control-car counterparts. However, unlike RC trucks, they produce 600 horsepower generating speeds upwards of 140 miles per hour hitting multiple strategically placed man-made aluminum ramps.
The 2017 SST World Championship will see the excitement of the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Presented by TRAXXAS return to the track March 3-5 in Adelaide, South Australia for the opening rounds of the 2017 season.
A whole host of new and old talent will be out to gun for 2015 & 2016 SST World Champion Sheldon Creed.
About SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Presented by TRAXXAS

Influenced by the former Mickey Thompson Stadium Off-Road Racing Series, where drivers such as Gordon, Casey Mears and six-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson got their start, Gordon created SST in response to the public’s overwhelming interest in trucks and off-road racing. His plan to re-launch the former stadium series has led to exciting racing on both asphalt and dirt, while producing one of the most extreme forms of action sports today.

Other than the trucks launching 20 feet in the air covering distances more than 150 feet, what sets the SST program apart from other series is the fact that all the SST trucks are identically prepared and delivered to drivers in race-ready condition. Race winners are decided by driver skill rather than individual team engineering and budgets. Drivers and their personal mechanics are assigned specific SST mechanics who together tune and make minor adjustments to the 600-horsepower trucks.

Lindsey Vonn is seen at the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup in Zauchensee, Austria on January 14, 2017

Former Olympic champion finishes 13th on World Cup return after injuries.

Lindsey Vonn was relieved to complete a downhill run on Sunday after her recent injury troubles.

The American finished 13th at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, however she posted a respectable time to finish 1.54 seconds off Austrian home winner Christine Scheyer.

Vonn, who has one Olympic gold and two World Championship golds across downhill and super-G, suffered a broken leg last March then a fractured arm in November.

The four-time overall World Cup champion also sat out large parts of 2013 and 2014 through a horror knee injury and had not raced competitively in 322 days after the latest setbacks.

She said, “I felt like I was skiing well, just not quite on the limit yet. It’s not a matter of the results, I’m just happy to be racing again.”

Swiss star Lara Gut finished just off the podium in fourth place to reduce the absent American Mikaela Shiffrin‘s overall World Cup lead to 315 points.
