Fields doubles up on UCI BMX Supercross World Cup wins in Argentina

Santiago del Estero, Argentina (May 11, 2013) — After winning the superfinal time trial yesterday, Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./BMX Racing Group-Chase Bicycles) rode to victory in the supercross on Saturday in the second round of the 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, held in Santiago del Estero, Argentina.

Fields, who won every lap he raced throughout the weekend, finished more than eight-tenths of a second ahead of runner-up Jelle van Gorkom of the Netherlands. Joris Daudet (France) finished third. Justin Posey (Winston Salem, N.C./Dan’s Competition), the men’s winner at the USA Cycling Collegiate BMX National Championships earlier this year, took fifth after qualifying for his first supercross world cup final.

“Justin is showing a lot of promise,” said U.S. national BMX coach James Herrera.

Along with Fields and Posey, Jared Garcia (Victorville, Calif./Supercross Bicycles) also advanced to the semifinals, but an untimely crash brought an end to his hopes of a spot in the finals.

“Jared had a solid weekend. He was in a qualifying spot in the semi going into turn two, but someone clipped his front wheel causing him to crash. He’s got a great future ahead of him,” commented Herrera.

Women’s Race

Arielle Martin (East Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX), who finished eighth in the superfinal time trial, crashed in her first lap of the qualifying motos, but came back strong to ride her way into the supercross final. However, another unfortunate crash led to a seventh-place finish for Martin.

In addition to Martin, Americans Dani George (Palmdale, Calif./Supercross BMX) and Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bicycles) also made the semifinal heats, but weren’t able to advance. After winning two of three qualifying heats, a crash in her semifinal race knocked Crain out of contention.

Despite a few crashes, the American squad showed a lot of promise throughout the event. “Team morale was good all weekend,” said Jamie Staff, USA Cycling’s high performance director of sprint programs. American BMX riders will next set their sights on the USA Cycling Elite BMX National Championships in Chula Vista, Calif., on May 18. Round three of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup falls June 15-16 in Papendal, Holland.

Fields fastest in BMX supercross time trial

Santiago del Estero, Argentina (May 10, 2013) – American Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) claimed the superfinal time trial victory today at the second round of the 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. Fields has now reached the podium in both of this year’s World Cups, having finished third in the superfinal time trial at the season opener in Manchester, England, in April.

“I felt really good coming into this race,” said Fields. “I set some sprint PR’s last week so I knew my training was on point. My first half lap was solid. I heard the announcer say I was in second going into the second turn. At that point I had to turn it up a notch. I kept it smooth and things came together well.”

Other American finishers in Friday’s men’s superfinal time trial were 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Donny Robinson (Napa, Calif./SE Racing) in 11th, Barry Nobles (Sun City, Calif./DK Bicycles) in 12th, and Jared Garcia (Victorville, Calif.,/Supercross Bicycles) in 16th.

In the women’s supercross time trial, Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bicycles) narrowly missed stepping on the podium with the fourth-best time. Arielle Martin (East Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) joined Crain in the top 10 with an 8th-place finish, while Dani George (Palmdale, Calif./Supercross BMX) was 15th.

“We couldn’t be happier with Connor’s progress and performance,” said U.S. Coach James Herrera. “His attention to detail and work ethic are among the best I’ve ever seen. All our athletes made us proud today. It’s great to see Arielle Martin back in action and Brooke Crain and Jared Garcia rode solid time trials. We’re all looking forward to racing tomorrow.”

Americans ready to contest round 2 of UCI BMX Supercross World Cup

Colorado Springs, Colo. (May 8, 2013) — USA Cycling has announced the six riders that will represent the organization in the second round of the 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup. The event begins Friday, May 10, in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, and runs through Saturday, May 11.

The USA Cycling funded team includes:

• Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./BMX Racing Group-Chase Bicycles)
• Barry Nobles (Sun City, Calif./DK Bicycles)
• Justin Posey (Winston Salem, N.C./Dan’s Competition)
• Jared Garcia (Victorville, Calif./Supercross Bicycles)
• Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bicycles)
• Arielle Martin (East Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX)

Other top American riders in attendance will be 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Donny Robinson (Napa, Calif./SE Racing) and Dani George (Palmdale, Calif./Supercross BMX).

In the superfinal time trial at the first round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, Fields finished third while Crain just missed the podium in fourth place. The following day, Crain rode her way to second in the supercross final. Fields was the top American male, finishing fifth.

Brooke Crain rides to 2nd place in round one of the Supercross World Cup in Manchester

Manchester, GBR (April 20, 2013) – American Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bicycles) rode her way onto the podium’s second step today at round one of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Manchester, England.

The 20-year-old Crain was fourth in her semi-final round to qualify for the final. In the main event, she grabbed the second-place position almost from the start and finished behind winner Shanaze Read (GBR) who took the victory on her home track.

“It was a rough start to the week with a bike delivery that showed up on the day of practice, but I managed to keep my head on straight and focus on the positives on and off the track which resulted in an awesome day of racing,” Crain said afterwards. “I’m encouraged for the rest of the season and for making a run at the Supercross overall title and a rainbow jersey.”

Merle Van Benthem (NED) grabbed the final spot on the podium in third while Americans Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline Bicycles) and Arielle Martin (East Spanaway, Wash./Intense BMX) were fourth and sixth respectively.

In elite men’s racing, Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./BMX Racing Group-Chase Bicycles) won his semi-final to become the lone American in the main event. He crossed the line in fifth-place after Great Britain’s Liam Phillips dominated the final for the victory. Tory Nyhaug (CAN) and Sam Willoughby (AUS) grabbed the silver and bronze medals.

Alise Post, Connor Fields are 2nd and 3rd in Superfinal Time Trial at Manchester World Cup

Manchester, GBR (April 19, 2013) — Two Americans ended up on the podium at round one of the 2013 UCI Supercross BMX World Cup in Manchester, England on Friday.

Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline Bicycles) and Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./BMX Racing Group-Chase Bicycles) were second and third respectively in the elite women’s and men’s Superfinal time trials.

Post turned in a blazing time of 33.212 to finish just behind winner Shanaze Reade (GBR) who took the victory on her home track with a time of 32.351. Rounding out the podium was Merle Van Benthem (NED) with 33.279 while American Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bicycles) just barely missed the podium in fourth and Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, Ill./GT Bicycles) was seventh for the USA.

In the men’s event, Fields clocked a 29.596 while Liam Phillips (GBR) and Tory Nyhaug (CAN) were first and second in 29.357 and 29.389.

Update on UCI Rule 1.2.019

Colorado Springs, Colo. (April 11, 2013) — After engaging in dialogue with USA Cycling to address the immediate concerns raised by the enforcement of UCI rule 1.2.019, the UCI issued the following statement today:

The UCI listened to the feedback from the various groups involved and who feel affected by a strict and immediate enforcement of rule 1.2.019 and its associated sanctions. The UCI has decided to postpone strict enforcement of rule 1.2.019 in 2013 with the expectation that all stakeholders (National Federations, race directors, teams and riders) will discuss and do what is necessary to prepare for the rule’s full enforcement in 2014.

“Notwithstanding the fact that rule 1.2.019 has been enforced in Europe for many years, it is clear strict enforcement in the U.S. and other countries will have unintended and undesirable consequences,” said Steve Johnson, USA Cycling President & CEO. “USA Cycling listened to the views expressed by the cycling community in America, and these issues were fully represented in discussions with the UCI. We would like to thank the UCI for its willingness to suspend enforcement of the rule globally to allow time for productive dialogue with all stakeholders to find a workable solution for the future.”

10 riders selected to represent USA Cycling at the 2013 UCI BMX World Cup in Manchester

Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 25, 2013) — USA Cycling has announced the 10 riders that will represent the organization in the first round of the 2013 UCI Supercross BMX World Cup in Manchester, England, April 19-20.

After several testing camps, the following riders have been selected as part of the funded team:

Jersey requirement for upcoming BMX continental championships

The UCI is requiring Championship level riders in this week’s BMX Continental Championships in Florida to race in their national team’s jersey. For those competing in the elite men and women classes as well as junior men and women UCI classes, a USA Cycling jersey is required.

Riders are asked to wear their 2012 world championships jersey. For those without that jersey or if you have had a change in career number or sponsorship, USA Cycling will have jerseys available on Friday. Riders can choose to either purchase or borrow one of these jerseys for the competition.

“According to article 1.3.059, every rider competing in a BMX world championship (Championship, Challenge and Masters level) and at the continental championships (Championship level) must wear a national BMX jersey matching the jerseys of his fellow-countrymen. The only variation allowed shall be advertising on the jersey. The national jersey must be worn whenever a rider is engaged in activities on the track, prize giving ceremonies, press conferences, television interviews, autograph sessions and other occasions during the event, which require a good presentation to the media and the outside world.”
