Spain’s Illa Pancha Challenge is the world’s newest big wave event, and Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca is its first champion. Located in the Ría de Ribadeo region of Galicia, on the north-west coast of Spain, Illa Pancha is a slabbing A-frame that needs just the right north swell to turn on. It doesn’t happen frequently, but when it does, like it did for the inaugural Illa Pancha Challenge, its left-hander morphs into the kind of slab big wave surfers like Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca, Natxo Gonzalez and Pedro Scooby dream of.
