FLORIANÓPOLIS, BRAZIL (Friday, August 31, 2018)  The team at WSL South America has been working hard to reinforce the event calendar in 2018. The region is proud to announce the addition of two Pro Junior events. The first is the O’Neill Pro presented by Petroperu from September 29-30 in Lobitos, Peru. The other is the São Francisco Surf Eco Festival on October 5-7 at Prainha in São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina.

In addition to determining the South American Junior Champions, these events also serve as qualifiers for the World Surf League Junior Championship Tour. In 2017, the regional titles were decided at a winner-take-all contest in Brazil.

The RDS Pro Junior in memory of Ricardo dos Santos was held at the iconic river-mouth, Guarda do Embaú, hometown to the renowned heavy water charger. Sponsored by Adriano de Souza, Yago Dora and Lucas Silveira – the close-knit group of Ricardo’s friends, the event saw Mateus Herdy (BRA) take home the men’s division, while Sol Aguirre (PER) defeated local surfer Tainá Hinckel in the Women’s Final.

Both Hinckel and the men’s runner-up, João Chianca (BRA) did well at the title showdown in Kiama, Australia. The duo ended up with 3 rd place finishes as they were both eliminated by the eventual champions, Finn McGill (HAW) and Vahine Fierro (PYF).

The race for the WSL South America Title will start at the O’Neill Pro Junior on the world-class lefthanders at Lobitos, in northern Peru. The latest generation of athletes will convene on the last weekend in September for a Men’s and Women’s combined event. However, the following event in Brazil will only be a Women’s competition during the first week of October.

The São Francisco Eco Festival is spearheaded by the WSL South America Women’s Ambassador, Marina Werneck. The stylish surfer is now focusing on the future of women’s surfing on the continent. By producing regional QS and Pro Junior events, Werneck hopes to tap into the deep talent pool and bolster the its rising stars. In addition to the Women’s Pro Junior event, a Women’s QS 1,500 is also scheduled to run during the event window.

NAGS HEAD, North Carolina/USA (Friday, August 31, 2018) – The World Surf League (WSL) WRV Outer Banks Pro Women’s Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 made a bit of East Coast history after spending nearly 14 years away from WSL competition and made work of the tough, one-foot conditions to complete Round 1. Top-seeded men await their Round 2 debut as their competition was called off for the day. But, this event is a great opportunity for up-and-coming women competitors and many of them contested in their first-ever QS competition with early victories.

South Africa’s Tanika Hoffman (ZAF) made her first trip to the Outer Banks count with a Round 1 Heat 1 victory over two young threats Kailey Bogart (HAW) and Maddie Garlough (USA). Hoffman currently sits at No. 79 on the QS and a result here could push her up the rankings to help earn a higher seed toward 2019. The 20-year-old’s best result came in her home country, a 7th-place finish, earlier this year and, after dealing with visa issues trying to get into the European leg, is on the prowl for points.

“I’ve been in LA since the Oceanside event and I thought it’s an event not too far, I’ve never been, so it looked like a fun one to come to,” Hoffman said. “It’s super cool that there’s more of these smaller events coming on schedule for the girls looking to get into the QS and get a few points. These 1,000 points are really important to keep your ratings up and after doing some of the QS 6,000s this year a few more extra points are always good. I had a problem with my visa for Europe, but I took advantage of the opportunity here and it’s great — I love traveling to new places and it’s good to keep competing.”

Charlotte Lange (USA) is only just getting her career started, competing in the Live Like Zander Junior Pro since 2016 and only has one QS event under her belt. But, the 16-year-old took that experience and used it to her advantage for an early win to start gaining momentum in the Outer Banks. Lange was just two-years-old when Claire Bevilacqua (AUS) won the last Women’s QS event at Jennette’s Pier and hopes to add her name to the list.

“I’m pretty stoked to make a heat in the QS after being in my first one earlier this year,” Lange said. “It was super tough at Sebastian Inlet just with waves everywhere, it was really chaotic. Here it’s easier to find your spot and I set myself up just at the end of the scaffolding with a good little sandbar there. It’s nice here and I’ve been able to hang out with my friends around with some of them from California, so it’s really cool. I can’t believe it’s been 14 years since they last had it so this is great to see it back.”

This marks Manasquan, New Jersey, native Morgan Iglay’s (USA) first QS event at 17-years-old and is taking advantage of the opportunity just a few hours from home. Iglay comes in with plenty of amateur surf competition experience, but now found herself winning her first-ever QS heat. It was a hard-fought heat in the tough conditions and Iglay rose to the occasion with her strategy working brilliantly.

“It’s really cool to be here, I’ve never done a contest this big and I’m really excited,” Iglay said. “Everyone at home is excited for me so that gives me a lot of encouragement. It’s really fun to be a part of this experience and I didn’t expect that win honestly so that’s great. You definitely have to be on the sets and use your priority right when you have it. It’s also important to be light on your feet and get those bigger turns in when you can.”

Vans US Open Pro Junior Finalist Makena Burke (USA) was gifted a Jennette’s Pier gem in the final five minutes and earned a 5.67, only needing a 2.43, to earn a heat win over fellow Californian Brooke Young (USA) and North Carolina native Leah Thompson (USA). Like Iglay and a handful of other competitors on hand, it’s the 15-year-old’s first QS event and her mindset is locked in. Burke recognizes the chance she has to capitalize on experience, as well as some points, in her first trip to the Outer Banks.

“It felt great to get through after just waiting for a wave and I was so lucky that one came through,” Burke said. “I think of this as a Pro Junior because I’m used to those and I try to find my comfort zone in events. I just try to stay calm and not think about it too much. It’s so nice to see this event on the schedule with Pismo coming later this year as well since it’s just a few hours from my house. It’s a really good opportunity with it being in North America and it’s closer than the other events.”

LOS ANGELES, California/USA (Friday, August 31, 2018) – For the first time in history, the World Surf League (WSL) will be hosting an aerial specialty event combining a cross-section of the world’s best surfers from the elite Championship Tour with a global field of specialists for the Red Bull Airborne France this October.

Josh Kerr (AUS), former Championship Tour (CT) surfer and universally-regarded as one of the most progressive aerialists in the history of surfing, is one of the co-developers of the Red Bull Airborne France and will serve as Event Director in October.

“Growing up, I was really into the whole action sports world: freestyle motocross, snowboarding and skateboarding, because it had attitude,” Kerr said. “Then I started seeing video of the first Airshows in America, with Christian Fletcher and Ratboy [Jason Collins], and they were just punk rock and edgy, and they were only concentrating on big punts. To me, that was it. That was the highest form of surfing. I just wanted to do the biggest thing I could do on a wave.”

One of the most successful surfers on the nascent Airshow series in the late-90’s and early-00’s, Kerr views the Airborne as the first step towards providing tomorrow’s surfers with a new platform for innovative expression in the water.

“I’m so excited this is happening because I really want to give kids this creative platform to gravitate towards at a young age,” Kerr continued. “It’s great to the WSL support this and I think it’s gonna help progress our sport and help open up a lot of kids’ minds, now that they’ll have a new platform to strive for that makes sense to who they are.”

The Red Bull Airborne France will feature an 18-man field across six qualifying heats and a Final, and will run in conjunction with the Quiksilver Pro France – the 9th Stop on the 2018 WSL Championship Tour.

Two remaining spots for the Red Bull Airborne France will be determined via an online submission site at http://www.wslairborne.com. The submissions will be judged by a panel including Event Director Josh Kerr, former CT stalwart and progressive surfing deity Taj Burrow, Ventura innovator Tim Curran and Santa Cruz’s aerial virtuoso Jason “Ratboy” Collins. The most deserving contestants — one surfer over 18 and one under 18 — will be awarded a spot in October’s competition.

“It’s always exciting when we can work with some of the world’s best surfers in developing new platforms for creativity and the advancement of the world’s best surfing,” Sophie Goldschmidt, WSL CEO, said. “We’re very much looking forward to France and the potential for it to be the start of something much bigger in this space.”

PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia – Spain (Friday, August 31, 2018) – Ups and downs continued today at the Pull&Bear Pantin Classic Galicia Pro as yesterday’s swell kept dropping in size, but still providing two-to-three foot walls for surfers to work with. The decision was made to call the women’s QS6,000 competition Off for the day and resume the men’s QS3,000 action.Timothee Bisso (FRA) started in the very first heat this morning with an incredible display of aggressive surfing to claim two 8+ rides and a massive 16.50 total. The Guadeloupe surfer posted his third consecutive heat win in this event by exploiting both the lefts and rights of Pantin.

Bisso was unfortunately later overthrown in Round Five by another form surfer, Mateus Herdy (BRA) and Ethan Ewing (AUS).

“Ethan and I had been waiting for a wave for so long I knew I had to do something special,” Herdy said. “I went straight for the air and had to grab my board cause the wind was terrible on the right. I was really stoked to land that one. I had one heat during the juniors on that very same peak so I’d say it helped as I knew the waves I was looking for.”

Kauli Vaast (FRA) took the debate to the air, sending a perfectly executed forehand rotation on a good little left, landed clean and went on to carve the wave face to post a 7.57 and take a win into Round Five. The former European Junior Champion has only just started to test the waters on the Qualifying Series but looked right at home among much more experienced competitors.

“I’m stoked I chose that option of the left, I was pretty much on my own there and the waves were really fun with a lot of wall,” Vaast said. “I’ve trained a lot on those maneuvers lately and I feel like it’s paying off. It’s only my second 3,000 event so I feel no pressure whatsoever. I’m staying with Ramzi (Boukhiam) and the other guys from the Quiksilver team, they all have tons of experience to share with me and it’s super cool to learn from them, they’re an inspiration.”

The Tahitian rookie later went back to his air game and confirmed his form with an important win in Round Five over Hiroto Ohhara (JPN), Pedro Neves (BRA) and Miguel Blanco (PRT).

QS No. 26 Maxime Huscenot (FRA) surfed the same lefthand bank but on his backhand and pushed a two-turn combo for an excellent 8.00 to make his way into Round Five.

“That first wave I got didn’t look all that great and nobody else even looked at it,” Huscenot admitted. “But I went for it and it just sort of bowled up for me and I was able to do two big turns so that was the best start possible. I’ve been very tired since the US Open, I think my loss there really weighed on me and I’m only starting to get back into it mentally. I’ve had a decent start this season so I’m still confident and I want to do well in the last few events of the year.”

Huscenot locked in a good battle in the following round with Australia’s Jackson Baker. Both surfers went blow for blow on the little rights of the higher tide peak while Aritz Aranburu (ESP) lead the heat. It eventually came down to a final wave in the dying moments from Baker who destroyed the lip a couple of times for a 7.17 to take the heat win, relegating Huscenot to third.

“I’m a bit shaken up it all just happened so quickly,” Baker said. “With three minutes to go I had first priority and I let a four-wave set go cause it looked a little bit bumpy. And then that last wave came with a minute and a half to go, I did a first big turn and I knew I had to stay on my feet to make it.”

Long time CT competitor Nat Young (USA) applied his textbook backhand attack on the rights and posted one of the biggest heat totals of the day as well in Round Four. The Californian didn’t find the same opportunities in the following round but managed to squeak through behind Adin Masencamp (ZAF) to keep his Pantin run alive.

“I wasn’t super confident on my peak choice, I’d seen it work before my heat but I knew it could shut down quickly,” Young said. “But I had to trust my gut feeling and it worked out. I feel comfortable out here with the kelp and the cold water, that’s what I’m surfing all the time.”

Long time Championship Tour athlete Alejo Muniz (BRA) demonstrated his superiority by claiming the day’s highest single scores of 8.93 on a right. The lightning fast Brazilian performed two massive forehand turns, throwing buckets of water all over the lineup for a near-perfect score. He went on to surf a similar wave in Round Five and applied the same recipe to take another win and make a statement of his intentions in Pantin.

“I knew that right was the best wave of the heat but it was hard to negotiate because of the all the seaweed,” Muniz said. “The top part of the wave was alright to do turns, but down the bottom it was hard to link in between turns. It was great to get that 8.93, I got more relaxed and it allowed me to choose my next waves.”

De Coster appointed U.S. Motorsport Director KTM/Husqvarna; Harrison promoted

Courtesy of KTM Racing

KTM is delighted to announce that motocross icon and overseer of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing AMA Supercross and Motocross team in the United States, Roger De Coster, will continue to be a part of the massively successful operation in Murrieta, California.
The Belgian has put pen to paper on a multi-year agreement and a new role for the KTM Group. De Coster will be ‘Motorsport Director KTM/Husqvarna North America’ and retain a more strategic and senior position in all of KTM and Husqvarna’s USA racing activities.

Ian Harrison has been Roger’s ‘right hand man’ and key collaborator for a number of years – certainly since 2011 when De Coster first came to KTM – and has also renewed his position with the KTM Group to become de facto Team Manager of the Red Bull KTM MX/SX squad and Technical Director of the KTM/Husqvarna efforts in the United States.

The De Coster/Harrison link was largely fundamental in the reorganisation of KTM’s sporting arm in high profile Supercross and Motocross circles at the start of the decade. The pair were instrumental in forging a close link with R&D in Mattighofen, Austria and elevating the race team to the position of champions.

Ryan Dungey’s signature was key as was development of outstanding talent such as Ken Roczen and Marvin Musquin; KTM went on to toast titles and milestones in every AMA division. Recently, the alliance with Aldon Baker’s training regime only strengthened the KTM Group’s status and ensured the finest resources towards the current and next generations.

De Coster: “I can still remember now when people said I was crazy to join KTM. It has almost been ten years but it shows that when a company is as serious and dedicated about their racing as the KTM Group are then many things are possible. I’m happy to again sign with them and to continue working with them to extend my long story in this sport. We have achieved a lot together and I don’t feel that the ‘fire’ is dimming or my motivation to keep this team and factory at the top of the sport is any less as the first day I wore the orange shirt. I’d like to thank Mr. Pierer, Pit and all the guys who work so hard to allow us to be where we want to be.”

Harrison: “Time has passed so quickly and it feels like we have done so much since we started to look at how and where we could be better back in 2011. I don’t think we could have imagined all the trophies and red plates we’ve collected, even if the ambition to do so was very strong then and has not faded in all this time. We went through the Dungey era and have seen the development of Marvin to a bona fide Supercross title contender. We’re not stopping and it’s exciting to think about where we can go next.”

Robert Jonas, Vice President KTM Offroad: “Having Roger and Ian as the solid backbone of our supercross and motocross division in the United States has paid back so much to the company. Believing and backing those guys the best way we can has allowed for some superb success in some of the biggest and most competitive motorcycle racing series’. Keeping them as part of the family and depending on their experience and wisdom was very important to us, so I’m really pleased to be talking about this new contract. I want to congratulate Ian, he is now leading the Red Bull KTM team and this is the least he deserves after so much work and dedication over the years. We will continue to plan and, hopefully, continue to reach our goals on American soil.”

AFYON (Turkey) 31 August 2018 – The FIM Motocross World Championship makes a return to Turkey this weekend after nearly 10 years away. The new track of Afyon will host MXGP and MX2 riders from around the world for 18th round of the 2018 season.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli comes into Turkey with a 73 point deficit on teammate Jeffrey Herlings who might have the possibility of claiming his first premier MXGP world championship title this weekend. Cairoli was the last Turkish GP winner back in 2009 but Herlings has been really strong this season. Meanwhile MX2 Championship fight is in full swing with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado striking the most recent hits to teammate Pauls Jonass as the gap is only 30 points with 3 rounds to go.

The 2018 MXGP of Turkey will receive traditional global television coverage from MXGP’s broadcast partners including live coverage in the host country of Turkey via TRT who will be on site.

The entire event including Qualifying Saturday and the races of MXGP plus MX2 on Sunday will be streamed LIVE worldwide from Afyon on www.MXGP-TV.com

As usual you can watch the 26min Behind the Gate in Europe on motorsport.tv & MotorTrend two days after the event. It can also be viewed in the USA/Canada on BeIn and MAV TV, Finland on MTV 3, Croatia on Kreator TV, South America on FOX Sports, Asia on FOX Sports, China on Fox Sports and SINA, and the Africa on Africa XP.
