LOS ANGELES, CA/USA (Tuesday, June 30, 2015) – The sixth stop on the 2015 World Surf League (WSL) Samsung Galaxy Women’s Championship Tour (CT), the Vans US Open of Surfing, will welcome back the world’s best female surfers from July 27 through August 2, 2015.

The high-performance beach breaks of Huntington Beach will serve as a midway point in the exciting hunt for the WSL Women’s Title with the Top 17 headlining the event alongside a men’s Qualifying Series (QS) 10,000 contest and Pro Junior event.

Carrying on the tradition of major competitive surfing at Huntington Beach since 1959, the Vans US Open of Surfing has evolved into one of the largest action sports festivals in the country, drawing huge crowds to celebrate the beach lifestyle and experience some of the world’s best surfing alongside world-class skateboarding, BMX, retail and art exhibitions. The full event window runs from July 25 through August 2, 2015 and you can read more here.

Two-time World Champion Carissa Moore (HAW) heads into the event as the Jeep ratings leader, despite an early exit at the recent Fiji Pro, and will lead the women’s elite to the hallowed sands of Huntington Pier. A fantastic season so far for the 2013 event winner has seen her claim back-to-back wins at the opening two events of the year and retain the Jeep leader jersey throughout 2015. Moore matches up against Silvana Lima (BRA) and the event wildcard in Round 1.

“It’s been a really fun year so far and I’m excited to be coming back to Huntington Beach,” Moore said. “The enthusiasm of the fans and the history of the event makes it really exciting for the surfers who compete there every year. Looking forward to the upcoming event.”

Defending event winner Tyler Wright (AUS) is currently in fifth place on the Jeep Leaderboard and will be keen to defend her prestigious title at the Vans US Open and improve her position on the ratings after a 9th place finish in Fiji. Wright will face Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Laura Enever (AUS) in the opening round of competition.

“Fiji didn’t pan out as well as I’d have liked but it was inspiring to watch Owen do what he did during the men’s event,” Wright said. “Still waiting to find my rhythm this year – same as last season. Hopefully I can find the same magic that I did last year in Huntington Beach.”

World No. 2 Courtney Conlogue (USA) is a former runner-up at Huntington Beach and after a series of sensational performances this season, including back-to-back CT victories, is a serious title contender and will be one to watch at the event. Round 1 will see Conlogue will battle Johanne Defay (FRA) and Sage Erickson (USA).

“Always love coming home and surfing the US Open,” Conlogue said. “It’s my home break and I feel comfortable and confident there. It will be great to have everyone in town and hopefully we get some good waves for it.”

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) is hoping to return to competition after a two event absence following a knee injury sustained in Western Australia in April. The reigning six-time WSL Champion has dropped two places to eighth on the rankings and will be looking for a strong result at Huntington Beach after a runner-up finish at the event last year. Compatriot Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) is also recovering from injury after suffering a perforated eardrum on her way to victory at the Fiji Pro.
The Vans US Open of Surfing will run from July 25 through August 2, 2015 and will be webcast LIVE via WorldSurfLeague.com and VansUSOpenofSurfing.com.

Weekend winners

Once again a bunch of riders had success over the weekend as they prepared for the Grand Prix of Sweden this coming weekend. Shaun Simpson, Max Anstie, Tim Gajser and Filip Bengtsson enjoyed success as they contested races in England, Germany and Sweden.

For Simpson of the Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM team, it was his fifth victory of the season in the British Motocross Championships as he went 2-1-1. Simpson now has an 84 lead in the standings.

The Defending MX1 champion in England was just too strong for his rivals, although he did get some serious hurry up from another GP rider in Steven Frossard. Frossard posted 1-2-2 results but lost out due to Simpson having a stronger third moto. Simpson was more than happy with his victory.

“I knew I had to win the last moto to have the overall, and when I crashed I knew that I would have to give everything I had to make that happen,” Simpson said. “What started as a difficult day turned into a really satisfying one; I wasn’t going to give up. I think that last moto showed a lot about how we go racing.”

In the MX2 class in England Max Anstie scored 1-1-1 results to take the victory ahead of Steven Lenoir 2-2-8 and EMX250 championship leader Steven Clarke who scored 3-5-3 results for third overall.

Reigning Swedish MX1 champion Filip Bengtsson of the 24MX Honda team made a strong return to race action last weekend at the third round of his domestic series in Västerås. Bengtsson dominated the event with a double moto win. He was joined on the podium by Filip Thuresson and Viktor Björklund. Bengtsson mentioned how happy he was go to into his home Grand Prix with the victory behind him.

“I’m pleased with my victory and how the weekend went in general. If you’ve been away from racing for a while it always takes a little adjustment! In many ways this was the perfect practice before Uddevalla. Today the track was very slippery and fast, quite tricky conditions actually. Then there was the heat which was pretty remarkable for Sweden. It reached 35° C today, but I know my fitness is good so I felt fine. The qualifying moto and time on the bike on Saturday gave me some extra race rhythm as well. It’s been great to get this race under my belt ahead of my home GP!”

In Germany at the beautifully prepared Aichwald circuit Tim Gajser won the latest round of the German MX1 championship ahead of Glenn Coldenhoff and Pascal Rauchenecker. The young MX2 rider moved up a class to show just what a talent he is.

“That was a perfect comeback to the series,” Gajser said. “I am familiar with the track from my time in the ADAC MX Junior Cup. That´s why I came to Aichwald thinking I could win again. I felt great, and the large crowd around the track pushed me all the way to the finish.”

All the GP riders who races last weekend will now head to Sweden for the next round of the MX2 and MXGP championships.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 30, 2015) – The Castle Rock TT, originally scheduled for Aug. 1, has been canceled due to unforeseen circumstances with the Mt. St. Helens Motorcycle Club, the promoters of the event.

“We regret not being able to host AMA Pro Flat Track and the Castle Rock TT in 2015,” said Jeremiah Cameron, president of the Mt. St. Helens Motorcycle Club. “We are looking forward to using this year to focus on making our club healthy again and we are optimistic about 2016 and the possibility of bringing AMA Pro Flat Track back.”

The Castle Rock TT dates back as far as 1965 as part of the AMA Pro Flat Track schedule. In 2014, Henry Wiles took the checkered flag en route to sweeping both TTs on the schedule, as he also won the Peoria TT.

The historic Peoria TT, set for Aug. 16 at the iconic Peoria Motorcycle Club in Peoria, Ill., is now the lone Tourist Trophy event on the 2015 AMA Pro Flat Track schedule.

“This is unfortunate for our many fans in the Pacific Northwest,” said Michael Gentry, Chief Operating Officer of AMA Pro Racing. “We hope to bring the sport back to the region in 2016 and beyond.”

Next up on the 2015 AMA Pro Flat Track schedule is the Du Quoin Mile in Du Quoin, Ill., on July 4. The event marks AMA Pro Flat Track’s return to the historic Magic Mile after a nine-year hiatus.

Thorsten Hallman – Mr. Motocross

Courtesy of Youthstream Media

Swedish legend Thorsten Hallman is the first rider to capture the hearts of the motocross world with multiple world championships to his name. Winning the 37 Grand Prix’s in his career, and four world 250cc championships in 1962, 63, 66 and 67 Hallman was known as simply Mr. Motocross.

Hallman was also known for his great battles with another legend in Joel Robert. The two swapped championships throughout the early 1960’s until the early 1970’s, Hallman with his four and Robert winning six.

Hallman was born in 1939 in Uppsala, Sweden, a scenic university town about 50 miles north of Stockholm. Hallman’s father and older brother were both motorcycle racers.

The Hallman family built a small practice track on the farm where they lived. They often hosted many of the top Swedish racers, who would come to the farm when they were in the area to train on the practice track.

From a young age, Hallman would sneak his older brother’s bike out for a ride. Hallman’s first bike was a 100cc DKW, which he quickly wore out from riding so much. His father then moved young Hallman up to a Royal Enfield 125.

By the time Hallman entered his first competitive race, he was already a skilled rider. He won that first race and knew that he wanted to pursue a racing career.

“The results really lit a fire for motorcycle racing, and it became the one thing on earth to live for,” Hallman said in his book, Mr. Moto-cross, written in 1970.

Hallman’s big break came in 1957 when he won a major junior team race riding a Husqvarna. It was then that Bror Jauren, manager of Husqvarna’s racing team, gave Hallman the chance to become a factory-supported rider.

By the 1960s, Hallman was competing in the world championships. He would go on to win the 250cc motocross world title four times. As mentioned his battles with Belgium’s Joel Robert were considered some of the best in the history of the championships. Hallman might have won even more titles, but he was carrying more than a full plate. During the early-1960s, Hallman was a full-time university student and a full-time racer. In 1965, his senior year in college, the workload became heavy and Hallman had to back off on his racing and training schedule, yet he still managed to finish fourth in the world championships that year.

Hallman was also the original owner of THOR Racing products, after selling the company he continues to follow the THOR riders. Now retired in his homeland in Sweden Hallman visited the Grand Prix races on the odd occasion, and will never forget the sport that gave him so much pleasure.
