Superb Start for Lorenzo at Silverstone

Silverstone (Great Britain), 30th August 2013
Defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo made a strong start to this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone in today’s two free practice sessions. The Mallorcan wrapped up day one as the fastest rider overall, 0.224 seconds clear of closest rival Marc Marquez. His fastest time of 2’02.734 seconds takes him underneath the fastest race lap of last year’s Grand Prix, set by himself. Lorenzo led the entire second session and completed the morning practice in second, 0.219 seconds behind Marquez.

Valentino Rossi made big steps forward over the course of today. The Italian nine-time world champion was 0.866 seconds off the fastest lap in the morning session in sixth place with a 2’04.682 lap. Some hard work over the day saw him improve by over a second to complete the afternoon practice in fifth with a 2’03.480 second lap.

“I started very fast because I improved almost one second and a half in the beginning; I was surprised with the improvement. At this track, when the rear tyre starts to drop it’s very difficult to keep the same pace so we have to work hard to make a constant bike that works over long distance. I’m satisfied because I think we have the possibility to fight for the victory this time.”

“I enjoyed today a lot, this track is great. If you are able to ride at the limit and have a good feeling with the bike, it’s very funny because it’s very fast, the track is so wide you go a lot of time at full throttle. I’m quite happy with the first day, especially because in the last two years I suffered a lot here in Silverstone. We made a good step, but we still have to work to find the right setting to have a good balance form the beginning to the end of the race. I’m not so bad in braking and entry but I have some problems in other areas so we have to work. We modified the setting from Brno because in the last two races I wasn’t strong enough.”

“A very good first day. First of all because the weather is very stable and it’s a nice temperature compared with last year which helps the lap times. The pace is already there so it looks like we have to make some small adjustments but the bike feels good and we are looking forward to qualifying tomorrow.”

Yamaha Factory Racing Massimo Meregalli
Team Director

“After a few Grand Prix we start this weekend in a really different way. We have been really fast since the beginning and the most important thing is the pace is really good. Both riders are quite satisfied with their set up, we know that we have to improve and we know which area to do it in. We also tested both tyre choices so we have completed a lot of work. We are pretty focused and we are very optimistic about the race.”

Labor Day Weekend Doubleheader at Springfield Mile Up Next for AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (August 30, 2013) – The Illinois Motorcycle Dealer’s Association (IMDA) will play host to the stars of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles this weekend, as the series visits Springfield, Ill. to run the legendary Springfield Mile twice in an action-packed doubleheader. The two 25-lap Grand National Championship mains will see the world’s top riders battling it out in the final event scheduled east of the Mississippi River in 2013.

The dirt track racing festivities at the Illinois State Fairgrounds will get started on Friday, August 30th, with amateur races set to begin at 7:00 p.m. local time on the short track located in the multipurpose arena. The stars of the Grand National Championship will then take to the mile-long circuit for Round 10 on Saturday, August 31, with opening ceremonies scheduled for 1:00 p.m. local time. Round 11 will bring the weekend to a close the following day, with opening ceremonies set to begin at 1:00 p.m. local time on Sunday, September 1.

No one enters the highly anticipated weekend with a bigger chip on his shoulder than Bryan Smith (Crosley Radio/Kawasaki). The Flint, Mich. product had a third 2013 victory within his grasp last weekend at Colonial Downs before an unexpected letdown dashed his efforts. The veteran started strong and was leading at the midway point before experiencing a mechanical blip that resulted in a lackluster 12th-place finish.

Luckily for Smith, rival Brad Baker (Dodge Bros Racing/Harley-Davidson) also had a weekend to forget in Virginia. Baker also fell victim to a motorcycle malfunction, but — unlike Smith — he was unable to complete the race. His 19th-place result allowed for Smith to take the lead in the Grand National Expert Twins point standings heading into Springfield.

JD Beach (TJ Burnett Farms/Kawasaki) is enjoying a brief gap in the GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing schedule and the GoPro Daytona SportBike competitor will be back for more AMA Pro Flat Track action this weekend in Illinois. Beach has shown moments of brilliance in each of his last three GNC outings, recording one podium finish, in addition to fifth- and sixth-place results. If history is any indication, Beach can be expected to challenge for the podium at Springfield, as the Philpot, Ky. native earned a fourth-place result here last fall.

Henry Wiles and Jake Johnson — newly formed teammates on the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports squad — will be on the attack this weekend. Harley-Davidson-mounted Johnson earned a second-place result in the first Springfield Mile held last year, but the New Jersey native has had a frustrating season so far and will be on a mission to take home his first podium in 2013 this time around. Wiles, known for his impeccable versatility on the shorter, more dynamic circuits featured in Grand National Singles competition, raised eyebrows last weekend at the Virginia Mega Mile with a strong second-place finish on his Ducati. The Winn, Mich. native will look to carry that momentum into this weekend.

Defending Grand National Champion Jared Mees (Rogers Racing/Harley-Davidson) comes into the weekend sitting fourth in the Grand National Championship point standings and will need big performances in both miles if he hopes to have a chance at defending his title. Mees recorded fourth- and third-place finishes at Springfield last year and comes into this weekend with a significant amount of confidence after winning at Colonial Downs.

AMA Pro J&P Cycles Basic Twins

The long anticipated arrival of the AMA Pro Basic Twins, a new class designed to provide AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles riders with a transition to the Grand National Expert level, is finally here.

The AMA Pro Basic Twins class has been designed specifically for Pro Singles riders that have the aspiration of one day competing at the Grand National Expert level. This stepping stone division will provide a way for the Pro Singles riders to get a feel for the powerful twin-cylinder motorcycles at the professional level without the added pressure of competing against the already proven Grand National Experts.

There are 12 riders pre-entered for Saturday’s inaugural event and 10 riders set to run on day two, and that number is expected to increase as post-entry is available for the class.

Among the AMA Pro Basic Twins contenders already entered, Shayna Texter looks to be the class of the field. The young star already has two AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles victories on mile-long circuits under her belt thus far in 2013 and she was just .008 of a second away from claiming a third win last weekend at Colonial Downs, finishing second behind Cody Johncox. Texter will be mounted on a Crosley Radio Kawasaki EX650 for both AMA Pro Basic Twins races scheduled this weekend at Springfield.

Johncox will look to repeat last weekend’s result at Colonial Downs, his first win in J&P Cycles Pro Singles competition this season. This time around, however, Johncox will put his single-cylinder Yamaha YZ 450F on the shelf and ride a Harley-Davidson.

Johncox claimed victory at the second running of the Springfield Mile here a year ago and the young star will certainly be looking for a repeat performance this weekend.

In his first year as a professional rider in J&P Cycles Pro Singles competition, Kyle Johnson is another rider that will make the leap to Basic Twins class this weekend. Johnson has been consistent for the majority of the season and has one win to his credit. The Twin Lake, Mich. product will be mounted on a Harley-Davidson with support from Sunnyside Cycle and Top Gun Construction.

Other notable riders slated to compete in the 12-lap AMA Pro Basic Twins mains include Jason Isennock (High Dairy Stores/Kawasaki EX650), Bronson Bauman (Goodwin Racing/Harley-Davidson), Michael Bickerton (DCT/Kawasaki EX650).

Fan Experiences

Aside from the incredible on-track racing action that the dual miles will provide this weekend, fans that will be in attendance for Sunday’s races will get a chance to witness two AMA Pro Flat Track superstars get married on center stage in front of the entire flat track community. Jared Mees and Nichole Cheza will tie the knot at 12:30 p.m. local time, just 30 minutes before Opening Ceremonies are scheduled to commence. The two have had the wedding planned for quite some time now and it will surely be a sight to see as both Mees and Cheza are nationwide fan favorites. For fans who are unable to be in attendance, the entire wedding will be available to view live on AMA Pro Racing’s live streaming video website at http://www.amaprolive.com/ft/.

After Saturday’s AMA Pro Flat Track races, there will be a “Rookie’s Class of ’79 & Friends After-Party” scheduled to be held in the Orr Building at the fairgrounds, with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. local time. So far, there are already 54 GNC riders – past and present – expected to be in attendance. Notable riders include: Scotty Parker, Ronnie Jones, Wayne Rainey, Chas Roberts, Tommy Duma and many more. There will be autograph sessions, photo opportunities, meet and greets, raffle drawings, a memorabilia auction and live music, with all of the proceeds generated at the event going to the Aid to Injured Riders (AIR) Foundation.

Courtney tops Americans’ effort on second day of MTB World Championships

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (August 29, 2013) — The 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships continued Thursday in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, with the juniors cross-country races and the seeding runs of the juniors downhill on a hot and dry day.

Cross-Country
Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) paced the American’s effort in the juniors women’s cross-country race, placing sixth. Alessandra Keller (SUI) topped the 39-rider field, completing her four laps in 1:18.24. Courtney, who won the juniors women’s world cup race in Mont-Sainte-Anne on Aug. 10, stopped the clock 3:41 behind Keller while Kaylee Blevins (Durango, Colo./Durango Devo) was 7:58 behind the winner. Emilie Collomb (ITA) earned the silver medal while Sarah Bauer (GER) took home the bronze medal.

Courtney was unable to improve on her starting position. She started the race in sixth place, slipped briefly into seventh place after the second lap before regaining sixth place for the final two laps of the four-lap, 18.8-kilometer contest. Blevins managed to improve two positions through the course of the race. After finishing her first lap in 18th place, Blevins improved to 17th after the second lap. She stayed in 17th place following her third circuit before passing Serena Tasca (ITA) on the final lap to finish in 16th place.

Sean Bennett (El Cerrito, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) used a tremendous effort to move up through the pack to top the Americans’ effort in the juniors men’s race by placing 28th, 8:46 behind the winner Lukas Baum (GER). Baum finished the five-lap, 23.5-kilometer contest in 1:20:06. Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif./Folsom Bike-VW-Raley’s), who contributed to America placing seventh in the cross-country team relay on Wednesday, finished 49 seconds behind Bennett in 32nd place. Luke Vrouwenvelder (Chapel Hill, N.C./Cycle Youth) was the third American to finish the race, placing 37th, 10:39 behind Baum. Peter Disera (CAN) took the silver medal, finishing 42 seconds behind Baum, but 20 seconds ahead of Gioele Bertolini (ITA), who rode away with the bronze medal.

Bennett completed his first lap in 49th place, but used the subsequent laps to gradually improve his position. Bennett moved into 44th place after the second circuit, 37th place after three laps before completing the five-lap contest in 28th place. Powless finished his first turn in 38th place and moved as high as 13th with one lap remaining, but slipped back into 32nd place in the end. Vrouwenvelder sat in 24th place after one lap before slipping into 37th place at the race’s conclusion.

Downhill
The United States placed four riders in the top 20 in the juniors men’s downhill seeding runs on Thursday. Richard Rude Jr. (Redding, Conn./Yeti-Fox Factory Racing) registered the second-best time, completing his run in 4:14.627, only .754 seconds behind Loris Vergier (FRA). Rude will be the second-to-last rider to contest the championship run on Friday.

Cole Picchiottino (Murrieta, Calif./Trek-Southridge Racing) posted the 13th-best time, completing the 3.021-kilometer course in 4:24.964, 11.091 seconds behind Vergier. Luca Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C./Specialized Gravity DH) placed 15th, stopping the clock at 4:26.865. Luca Cometti (San Diego, Calif./Nema Nukeproof) and Jay Fesperman (Davidson, N.C./Yeti Fox National Team) placed 17th and 18th, respectively. Cometti finished 13.938 behind Vergier while Fesperman was 14.022 behind the top time. Walker Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C./Specialized Gravity USA) rounded out the Americans’ qualification effort, placing 40th, 26.920 seconds behind Vergier.

The 3.021-kilometer course featured technical sections such as a downward stair step-like rock garden, cork screw and many berms and jumps as well as pedal and power sections.

The racing in Pietermaritzburg continues until Sept. 1. Friday’s competition includes the juniors men’s and women’s downhill competitions as well as the under-23 men’s and women’s races.

MX3 Heads to Czech Republic – Top Five Recap

Courtesy of Youthstream Media

PACOV (Czech Republic), 29 August 2013 – Built by the hands of motocross enthusiast’s way back in the 1960’s, the hard pack circuit of Pacov, Czech Republic, gets ready to host round eight of the FIM MX3 World Championship, as well as the fifth round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship.
Coming into this round, Slovenian Klemen Gercar has been consistent all season and currently holds onto the red plate with a fifteen point advantage over local hero Martin Michek, and Chiara Fontanesi is travelling to the Czech Republic with 31 points advantage over Natalie Kane, who won the British round last weekend in Matterley Basin.

MX3
Martin Michek was the runner up in the 2012 FIM MX3 Championship and looks to be picking up momentum in the 2013 MX3 championship as his result’s gradually improve. Looking at his points patterns at the recent rounds, Czech Michek will definitely be on the hunt for glory this weekend as he lines up for his home round.

Third in the championship is the defending champion Matthias Walkner. Walkner has had a season of ups and downs, at the previous round in Matterley Basin the Austrian finished second in race one but was plagued with bad luck in race two when he was caught up in some first corner carnage. This weekend we are expecting to see him steal back some valuable championship points, but as we have seen in previous rounds, anything can happen.

A further twenty-five point’s back from Walkner, in fourth is the round one winner and early red plate holder Gert Krestinov. Krestinov has had moments of greatness this season, proving he is more than capable of winning. The Estonian said earlier in the season his lack of results on the hard pack circuits were due to not enough hard pack training, but now as we enter the closing stages of the championship we expect that he has done the work required, making him a definite podium contender.

Rounding out the top five is Frantisek Smola; after spending the last two years chasing his dreams in the USA, Smola has returned to Europe ready to race. The Czech has already stood on the second and third steps of the podium at earlier MX3 rounds so we are sure he will be looking to better those results in his home country this weekend.

WMX
Joining the MX3 in Pacov, Czech Republic, this weekend will be round five of the FIM WMX World Championship. After the last round in Matterley Basin, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Chiara Fontanesi’s winning streak was put to an end by HM Plant KTM UK’s Natalie Kane. Kane had never won a WMX World Championship overall before that day, now with the monkey off her back, we assume the charismatic Irish lady will be expecting to back it up again this weekend.

Meanwhile, Fontanesi still holds the red plate with a thirty one point cushion over Natalie Kane. Kane on the other hand, can’t rest easy as she has Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge breathing down her neck only four points back meaning with only two rounds to go, the race for second is wide open. Behind the three front runners former WMX World Champion Stephanie Laier is currently occupying fourth, twelve points behind Rutledge in third, and the rookie Dutch Nancy Van de Ven rounds out the top five in fifth.

Photos of the Czech round will be available here.
