Dungey wins at Southwick; Roczen 2nd in 250s

Courtesy of KTM

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey captured his third overall win of the season finishing 1-2 at round six of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series held at Moto-X 338 racetrack in Southwick, MA. Teammate Ken Roczen was second in the 250 class and retails the points lead in the championship standings.

Dungey didn’t get the best of starts and was sitting in tenth after the opening lap. But be worked hard at picking off rider in front of him and was in third spot by lap 10. KTM rider Andrew Short was in the lead in what was his best race of the season and was out in front. Dungey first Dungey got by Brett Metcalfe for second made the pass on Short with two laps to go. Dungey went on to win the moto with Short firmly placed second.

In the final 450 moto Dungey got a great start. He grabbed the holeshot and battled wheel-on wheel with Ryan Villopoto through the opening turns. Villopoto eventually got the upper hand and moved into the early lead with Dungey positioned close behind. The pair battled upfront for the majority of the moto but Villopoto prevailed and Dungey took second. Dungey’s 1-2 moto results beat out Villopoto’s 4-1 results earning him his second straight overall win and third overall victory of the season.

“Today was a good day,” said Dungey. “It’s nice to come out on top two weeks in a row. I feel I rode really good in moto one putting in solid laps and pushing myself. I ’m not too stoked with finishing moto two in second place but I know I gave it my all and I pushed all the way to the end. What I’m most happy about is earning more championship points and narrowing the points gap to 12. I think we’re in for an exciting end to the Motocross season with six rounds left.”
.

Roczen Second at Southwick
Meanwhile Red Bull KTM Factory teammate Ken Roczen earned second overall in the 250 class at the Moto-X 338 racetrack while teammate Marvin Musquin finished eighth overall.

Both riders were caught up with a bunch of riders in the opening 250 moto and while Roczen navigated his way through to challenge the opening lap from a mid-pack position,. Musquin went down in the corner and was forced to race from the back of the pack. Roczen was quicker to recover, slicing his way from eleventh to third position in just five laps. Musquin rounded lap one in 24th place and by lap 10 had worked his way to tenth. Roczen went down in the closing stages but was quick to get back up and finished the moto in third position. Musquin was tenth at the flag.

Both riders made a better start in the second moto with Roczen nabbing the holeshot and Musquin close behind him in second. Roczen went on to ride a perfect race, leading every lap of the race to take an impressive win. Musquin who has been fighting a head cold this week struggled to fend off advances from a number of riders eventually finished ninth. Roczen’s 3-1 results put him second overall with Eli Tomac beating him for the overall (1-2) and Musquin was eighth.

I’m really happy to win another moto,” said Roczen. “It always feels good winning. I got a really bad start in the first moto when Marvin (Musquin) was forced into me in the opening turn. Starting a race mid-pack always ends up being a lot of extra work so I was happy in moto two when I go the holeshot and was able to ride my own race. I didn’t get tired and felt good the whole moto, which I’m really happy about. The team and I have also come a long way this week dialing my race bike in to my liking. Every rider is different and what works for Marvin set-up wise doesn’t necessarily work for me. We worked a lot on my set-up this past week and it showed today. I’m really happy with the way everything panned out this week.”

Guillod does it again

UDDEVALLA (Sweden), 30 June 2013 – After a week of dark clouds and rain, the skies of Uddevalla Sweden cleared up to host round three of the EMX250 Championship where Valentin Guillod kept up his momentum taking his third consecutive overall win to remain so far unbeaten in 2013. Damon Graulus was second and Jeremy Seewer was thrid.

The EMX250 Final kicked off with Standing Construct KTM’s Damon Graulus firing out of the gate to take the holeshot and the early lead. Following closely behind was Stabilo Progrip MX Team’s Brian Bogers who was chased hard by the current championship point’s leader Guillod Motorsport’s Valentin Guillod.

After sitting calmly in third, around half way the Swiss Guillod set the fastest lap time and began plotting his attack. While Brian Bogers put up a good fight, a crash would hand the second place to the flying Swiss Valentine Guillod who then went on to take the lead from Graulus with three minutes to go.

Taking full advantage of Brian Bogers mistake was KTM Scott Racing’s Brent Van Doninck. Van Doninck rode the last half of the race comfortably in third until his hopes for a podium finish went up smoke when a mechanical issue forced him to retire with only two laps to go.

Benefiting from the bad luck of Van Doninck and Bogers was the Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe of Jeremy Seewer. Seewer started outside the top ten and made a series of great passes to eventually finish the race in third.

Meanwhile Stabilo Progrip MX Team’s Brian Bogers eventually recovered from his horrible crash to come home in fourth ahead of fellow Dutchman Micha-boy De Waal in fifth.

LIMA, Ohio (June 30, 2013) – Round 4 of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles at the Allen County Fairgrounds has been cancelled. For the second time this weekend, weather has been at the forefront of problems and has resulted in the cancellation of the Lima Half-Mile. Following another heavy overnight storm, the gravel track at the Allen County Fairgrounds was left in such condition that it was deemed unsafe to race on.

“The moisture on the track simply could not be safely prepared for racing,” said Dan Johnsen, Director of AMA Pro Flat Track. “We just caught some bad luck this weekend, it’s very unfortunate but that’s really all it comes down to.”

Aussie hotshot Darcy Ward wins Moldow Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix

WINNER WARD WISER FOR INJURY WOE

Australian sensation Darcy Ward admits two months of injury hell were a blessing in disguise after collecting his maiden Grand Prix win in the Moldow Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix in Copenhagen on Saturday.

The 21-year-old topped the rostrum at PARKEN ahead of Slovenian racer Matej Zagar, world champion Chris Holder and Polish legend Tomasz Gollob after a titanic tussle with Zagar in the final.

Ward made a racing comeback with his Swedish team Dackarna on Tuesday after spending seven weeks out nursing the broken shoulder blade he suffered in the Fogo Swedish SGP in Gothenburg on May 4.

That injury was the culmination of a serious of crashes which plagued a tough start to the year for the Queenslander.

But Ward says he is back a wiser rider after leaving the Danish capital with 19 points out of a possible 21 and his first Grand Prix win in only his sixth SGP appearance.

He said: “I’ve learned a lot of things since I’ve been injured. I’ve been watching the guys and trying to learn as much as I can. The time off helped me a bit and I feel better than ever – I probably wouldn’t change that crash.

“When I came back at the start of the year, I was enjoying it, but I didn’t feel comfortable in a way. I was still going really well, which I was happy with. I was second in the World Championship standings after Bydgoszcz – I was stoked with that. But I think the time off really helped me and I thought about a lot of things.

“I wouldn’t change it after returning like that. I have a long career ahead. I’ve got to move on, keep doing what I’m doing and just enjoy it. It’s such a good life that we have and you’ve got to appreciate it sometimes.

“It has been hard work, but I’ll never forget a moment like this. I’m very proud to be here and very grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given. It’s a dream come true and I felt good all night. It was a perfect night. I’m happy with that.

“There has been a lot of hype about my name and it’s good to finally have the chance to step up here and take a Grand Prix win.”

Asked what he had changed during his injury absence, Ward replied: “It’s just my style – a bit of mental stuff and a bit of fitness too. I’ve stepped it up and it was a great night.

“I need to keep doing what I’m doing and I need to stay fit. I need to stay on the bike, which is what I didn’t do at the start of the season. It cost me and I need to learn from that.”

After realising a boyhood dream to become a Grand Prix winner, Ward paid tribute to his parents watching at home near Brisbane for their love and support in getting him on to the sport’s biggest stage.

He said: “It’s what you always dream of and it has been a lot of hard work from when I was a kid. My Mum and Dad put their heart and soul into me to get me here. All the credit to them – I love them and I’m very thankful for what they have given me.”

Ward lines up for Torun in their highly-anticipated Polish Ekstraliga battle with local rivals Bydgoszcz on Sunday.

He also confirmed rumours he is back in the Poole side and will make his return at Coventry on Friday evening.

He said: “I’m looking forward to that. Poole have been winning recently, but they were struggling there for a long time. We’re the mighty Poole Pirates. We always pick up, push forward and do the fans proud.”

Zagar was over the moon to bounce back from being excluded in heat three by recording 13 points and claiming his second silver medal of 2013. The Ljubljana-born star managed just 10 points in the previous two SGP events combined and was happy to be back on song.

“I needed the points and, in the end, it was close to perfect,” he said. “Congratulations to Darcy, he was faster in the final. I’m pretty pleased after a disastrous start. It was a very good result for me.

“It could have been even better, but after the last few GPs, it was a much better performance from me. I was struggling a little bit with the engines. These problems are hopefully gone now and I’m looking forward.”

Holder, who is third in the World Championship on 82 points, admits he felt short of speed at PARKEN. But he was pleased to move a point closer to Emil Sayfutdinov, who still leads the table on 97 after exiting in the semi-finals with 13 points.

The Sydneysider said: “It would be nice to be a little bit faster, but if I can still get a few points and get on the podium, that’s a good job for me.

“I swapped bikes and that was better. I just need that little bit more speed and that comes down to a few things – me, the bike. It’s getting there and I’m happy to be in this position.”

The meeting saw Swedish duo Andreas Jonsson and Fredrik Lindgren crash out. AJ has sustained a broken shoulder and ribs, while Lindgren suffered a broken arm.

Both are major doubts for the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup, which gets underway with Event 1 at Czestochowa on July 13 and Event 2 at King’s Lynn on July 15.

Impressive pole for Frossard in Uddevalla

Courtesy of Youthstream Media

UDDEVALLA (Sweden), 29 June 2013 – Day one of the Swedish Grand Prix started with some dark clouds and right after the first free practices it started to rain heavily. The track conditions changed significantly and even if it stopped raining by the middle of the MX2 qualifying race, the riders found the track really demanding. Jeffrey Herlings obtained his fourth pole today, but the big surprise of the day was the strong comeback of Steven Frossard who dominated the whole MX1 qualifying race.

The EMX250 riders took part in the Semi Final heats this morning and whereas the red plate holder Valentin Guillod dominated Group A race, Jeremy Seewer obtained a comfortable victory in Group B heat.

MX1
Monster Energy Yamaha’s Steven Frossard was finally back today in the FIM Motocross World Championship after having missed most of the season due to knee and a foot injury, but he could not have a better comeback, as he dominated the qualifying race since the very beginning. The French rider has been training really hard to do well this weekend and even if he felt some pain during the sighting lap, once the gate dropped he gave it all and nobody could stopped him to win the race. Frossard admitted that it might be very difficult for him to keep a good rhythm during both heats tomorrow, but his goal is to finish among the top three best riders.

The second position of the MX1 qualifying race was for Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle, who had obtained the best lap time in the pre-qualifying practice. The Belgian rider really likes the Swedish track but he found it hard to overtake Frossard even if he was riding faster than the French rider in the beginning of the heat. Desalle admitted that he was happy with his riding but after the race he made some more changes in the settings of his engine in order to make sure he obtains a good result tomorrow, as he did last year in Uddevalla.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Ken De Dycker started the heat fourth behind Shaun Simpson, but after four laps the Belgian rider managed to move up to the third position. Once De Dycker overtook the British rider, both Frossard and Desalle had already opened a big gap, so the KTM rider decided to ride safe and ensure a good gate pick for tomorrow.

The fourth position was for Shaun Simpson who is racing with JK SKS Gebben Yamaha this weekend – the British rider and TM Ricci Racing agreed on working separately from now until the end of the season. Simpson has proved today that he has adapted really fast to his new Yamaha because he has obtained the best result of the season.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli was one of the first ones to reach the first corner after the start of the qualifying race, but after a couple of corners he was down in the fifth position. As the track conditions were really demanding the Italian decided to ride safe and not to risk too much and he rode a consistent moto in the fifth place. Cairoli admitted that he has no pain on the knee anymore and he is really confident for tomorrow’s races as it is expected to be sunny.

Jeremy Van Horebeek did also a solid race in fifth, as well as Max Nagl and Evgeny Bobryshev who crossed the finish line sixth and seventh respectively. Tommy Searle rode ninth during the whole qualifying race whereas Kevin Strijbos starred in an incredible recovery from almost the last position up to the final tenth place.

Gautier Paulin started down in the tenth position and he was not able to overtake any rider. On top of that, by the end of the race a lapped rider took his line and the French rider crashed and Paulin crossed the finish line thirteenth. However, he is confident about tomorrow as the track conditions will be completely different if it stays dry.

Tanel Leok, who was back from a shoulder injury this weekend, struggled a little bit on the Swedish track. The Estonian crashed several times and he finished sixteenth, but he is really happy to be back racing with TM and he expects to obtain good results with his new team in this second half of the season.

MX1 Qualifying Race top ten: 1. Steven Frossard (FRA, Yamaha), 25:52.034; 2. Clement Desalle (BEL, Suzuki), +0:03.920; 3. Ken de Dycker (BEL, KTM), +0:26.789; 4. Shaun Simpson (GBR, Yamaha), +0:28.746; 5. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:30.587; 6. Jeremy van Horebeek (BEL, Kawasaki), +0:31.863; 7. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Honda), +0:33.421; 8. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, Honda), +0:35.722; 9. Tommy Searle (GBR, Kawasaki), +0:38.585; 10. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:48.326;

MX2
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings succeeded to have a good start in today’s qualifying race and he dominated the heat until the chequered flag. The Dutch rider admitted that even if he won with twelve seconds difference with the second classified he found the track really demanding due to the heavy rain at the beginning of the race. Herlings hopes to have a dry race tomorrow and try to obtain his maiden Grand Prix victory in Uddevalla.

CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy Pro Circuit’s Alessandro Lupino found himself really comfortable today in Uddevalla and after obtaining the second fastest lap time in the pre-qualifying practice he managed to ride second during the whole qualifying heat. The Italian rode close to Herlings in the beginning of the race and he even clinched the fastest lap of the race in his fifth lap, but Lupino could not follow Herlings’ rhythm and crossed the finish line twelve second behind the Dutch rider.

Third in today’s qualifying race was Monster Energy Yamaha’s Christophe Charlier; the French rider started right behind Lupino and he pushed really hard to overtake him, but a problem with his goggles in the early stages of the race forced him to ride safe in the third place.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordi Tixier started fourth behind Lupino and Charlier and even if he tried to follow their lines and keep together with the front group, he lost some ground and had to settle down with the fourth place. The French rider is looking forward to tomorrow’s races because if it is sunny as it has been forecasted, he is confident he can ride for a podium finish.

Monster Energy Yamaha’s Dean Ferris had a good start in fifth and after three laps he made a mistake and dropped down two positions. However, he managed to get back quickly to his Yamaha and he recuperated his speed and overtook his teammate Mel Pocok and José Butrón to cross the finish line fifth.

José Butrón did not feel really comfortable today at the Swedish track and he crossed the finish line sixth, but he is also positive for tomorrow and he will give it all to defend his third position in the championship. Romain Febvre did not have a good start, but he managed to move from tenth to seventh and Glenn Coldenhoff also succeeded to improve his initial eleventh position to finish eighth.

Norwegian Even Heibye obtained his best race result of the season by crossing the finish line ninth ahead of British Mel Pocock. After a good start in eighth Jake Nicholls had some difficulties to keep his rhythm and he could only finish eleventh, and the same happened to Alexander Tonkov who obtained an eventual twelfth place.
