Coma wins Sealine Rally for second year in a row

KTM’s three-times Dakar winner Marc Coma of Spain on Friday sealed victory in the second edition of the Sealine Rally in Qatar, the second round of the 2013 World Cross Countries Rally Championship.Coma won the four-stage rally by the narrowest of margins, finishing just 4 seconds ahead of Portugal’s Paolo Goncalves. The minor podium place went to KTM factory teammate Jakub ‘Kuba’ Przygonski of Poland and the third member of the KTM trio, Chaleco Lopez of Chile finished fourth. All three KTM riders were onboard the KTM Dakar-winning 450 Rally bike.

The top four riders finished the rally after four very long stages within 4 minutes 29 of each other underlining that this was a race of an entire different character. Run for the first time in 2012, the Sealine Rally, coming straight on the back of the more established Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, was compacted from five to four days. But riders were on their bikes, trekking across the desert sand for around five hours a day in what was an all-out scramble for fastest.

Going into the final stage, Coma was very aware that it was going to be a close finish. He started the day with a 2 minute 4 second advantage over Goncalves. Then his Portuguese opponent lost some ground after a navigational error and Coma again had the advantage.  Knowing the win was at stake, Coma decided to take the cautious approach with the navigation and Goncalves was back in contention behind him at the 190 km mark of the 275 km special. From then on it was a dash by both riders to the finish and they crossed the line in unison, with the victory going to Coma by just 4 seconds.

Although he said it was very tough throughout the four days, Coma, making a return to racing after an injury problem that kept him out of the 2013 Dakar Rally was still happy at the close. “The long distance, the navigation, the weather – this race has really gone to a high level. I lost some time in some loose sand after the passage control, but I saw Paulo after about 190 km and it was exciting all the way to the finish,” he told reporters at the end of the race.

Coma’s slim victory here means he retains the title in 2013. Together with his win in the Desert Challenge, it lays the foundation for another solid attack on the 2013 World Championship title.

Millsaps Scores Tenth Podium of the Season at Seattle Supercross

FARMINGDALE, N.J. (April 24, 2013) -The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Series continued this weekend in Seattle, Washington, with round 15 of the 17-round series. Bel-Ray racer Davi Millsaps scored his 10th podium of the season with a solid third place in the rainy conditions.

Millsaps’ podium finish allowed him to jump back into second place in the series standings, just one point ahead of series rival Ryan Dungey. Millsaps night began well with a victory in his heat race, and he backed it up with a solid twenty lap main event for a strong third place finish. “It was a great night though and it was my 10th podium of the year so I’m pretty stoked on that, said Millsaps following the main event. “Also my 7th heat race win. It’s just been an awesome season. I know I lost the points lead, then dropped to 3rd, and now I’m back to 2nd, but it doesn’t matter. It’s been a great run and the best of the best are all in this class right now and we’re all near the front.”

In the 450-class racing, Bel-Ray sponsored RCH Racing duo Josh Hill and Broc Tickle rode excellent races, overcoming adversity throughout the day. Hill qualified directly from his heat race into the main event, but he went down in the first turn at the beginning of the main event. He quickly remounted and charged through the field for an eventual 12th place finish. His teammate, Broc Tickle, was forced to qualify into the main event through the last-chance qualifier after a crash in his heat race. Despite a starting position on the outside of the gate, Tickle came through the field for his seventh top-ten finish of the season.

Bel-Ray-sponsored Rockstar Energy Racing fielded two racers in the 250 class this weekend. The West Coast Series started up following the nine-week break for the East Coast Series. Jason Anderson struggled with the difficult track conditions to score a 10th-place finish. With two rounds remaining, Anderson is currently in 5th place in the series standings. Despite being fast all day, a poor start in the main event meant that he was buried in the pack during the main event. Anderson’s teammate, Ryan Sipes, made his return to racing following a hand injury suffered earlier this season. He ran up front early in the main event, but the time off forced him to tighten up, though he held on for a credible 7th-place finish at the checkered flag.

Both teams rely on Bel-Ray products to protect their machines and to perform at the highest level. The same products used by the team can be found on dealer shelves worldwide.
Bel-Ray® Works Thumper® Racing Full Synthetic Ester 4T Engine Oil is one of the products chosen by the teams to keep their machines performing their best.

On Wednesday Coma had to scramble back into the reckoning after having to stop to fix a broken seat. He was in the overall lead by just three seconds at the end of the day and Goncalves continues to be his main challenger for the prize.

Riders are stationed in the desert bivouac outside of Doha and each day are on their bikes for four to five hours riding a loop circuit mostly in excess of 400 km, of which more than 98 percent is timed special. The rally concludes on Friday with a shorter 282 km stage of which 275 km is timed special and it will be a hard fought last day.

New EMX125 and EMX250 race format

Courtesy of Youthstream Media

FUNCHAL (Portugal), 25 April 2013 – Due to the magnificently high number of entries for the 125 2 stroke (69 entries) European Championship and the 250 (94) European Championship for Portugal, Youthstream and FIM Europe are delighted to be able to announce a change in the race format for these Championships permitting every rider to race. The former format would have sent home more than 50% of the riders after the timed practice not allowing them the chance to race, however it is imperative for the young riders to be able to race in order to improve.Youthstream sees the European Championship as the base of our sport’s pyramid and it’s fantastic to see the number and quality of riders increase with each year, despite the severe financial situation in Europe.

The format will consist of 2 groups for the free practices, 2 groups for the timed practices, 2 semi-final races and a last-chance race on the Saturday, then the final will be held on Sunday and broadcasted live on MX-LIFE.TV. Points for these Championships will be given for the results of the final on Sunday.

This new format for the 125cc 2stroke and 250cc European Championships will continue for the remainder of this season.

By clicking here you will be able to download the entry list of the EMX125 and EMX250 entry lists for the Portuguese round, which will take place in Agueda during the 5th May weekend.
