FARMINGDALE, N.J. (April 29, 2013) ― The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Series reached its penultimate round this past weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday night. Bel-Ray racer Jason Anderson reached a milestone event in his professional racing career with his first Supercross main event victory in the 250 class. Anderson’s Rockstar Energy Racing teammate Davi Millsaps continued his podium streak with a solid 2nd place finish in the 450 class main event.

Anderson’s night began well enough after scoring the third fastest time during afternoon qualifying and winning a strong 2nd place finish in his heat race, but it was during the main event when he was really able to shine. The clutch on his Bel-Ray Lubricants powered Suzuki hooked up well off the line, and he entered the first turn in a top five position. In 2nd place after lap one, Anderson was close to the early race leader Zach Osborne and checked out from the field. Anderson then rode a consistent, flawless race to take the checkered flag for the first Supercross victory of his professional racing career. Anderson’s teammate, Ryan Sipes, scored a 7th place finish in only his second race after returning from an early season injury.

In 450 class racing, Bel-Ray sponsored Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps came into Salt Lake City following his tenth podium of the season the previous week in Seattle. Millsaps looked good all night long, including during a confident win in his heat race over series champion Ryan Villopoto. In the main event, Millsaps again started well and was into 2nd place by the third lap. For the entire 20 lap main event, Millsaps was close to the leader, closing each lap with a fantastic drive through the challenging whoop section. In the end, he simply ran out of time, was unable to make the pass to first place, and had to settle for a hard-fought 2nd place. Millsaps remains in 2nd place in the series standings heading into the finals next weekend in Las Vegas.

Bel-Ray powered RCH Racing again put in an excellent night of racing with team riders Josh Hill and Broc Tickle scoring top 15 place finishes. Hill’s 7th place was the best finish of his season, while Tickle’s consistent 11th keeps him inside the top 10 in the series standings. “I got a decent start in the Main and made a few quick passes to gain some spots,” Hill said. “I got up into the top 10 early and that helped. The race start was so hard if you were starting outside of the first few gates because it was such a short straightaway and tight left-hand turn. Guys would just bang into each other. Riders with the first eight gate picks chose the inside. It was a battle.”

“It was a solid start in the Main until I went down,” Tickle said. “I was riding ninth and about to pass Andrew Short but skipped over a couple of the whoops and crashed pretty good. So I got up, got in behind (Trey) Canard and just started picking guys off that I had lost positions to earlier.”

Both teams rely on Bel-Ray products to protect their machines and to perform at the highest level. The same products used by the team can be found on dealer shelves worldwide.

Bel-Ray Works Thumper Racing Full Synthetic Ester 4T Engine Oil is one of the products chosen by the teams to keep their machines performing their best.

Bel-Ray Works Thumper Racing Full Synthetic Ester 4T Engine Oil is a 4-stroke synthetic motorcycle racing oil that has been developed for full works competition use and is designed to withstand extreme racing conditions.                 The series concludes Saturday night, May 4th at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ryan Villopoto Secures Third Consecutive Monster Energy Supercross Title with Ninth Win in Salt Lake City

Anderson Breaks Through for Inaugural 250SX Class Victory

SALT LAKE CITY (April 27, 2013) – After an intense three-rider battle that lasted the entire Main Event, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto secured his third consecutive Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 43,149 inside Salt Lake City’s Rice-Eccles Stadium. Villopoto needed his 450SX Class-leading ninth win of the season, and the 33rd win of his career, in order to achieve the feat. Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson broke through to win his first career 250SX Class Main Event on a wild night in the Western Regional Championship.

Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey was the first rider out of the gate in the 450SX Class Main Event, claiming the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot Award with Villopoto alongside. The champion wasted little time in making a pass on Dungey for the lead and then set a torrid pace over the opening laps to open a two-plus second advantage.

Millsaps got alongside Dungey on Lap 2 and made the pass for second, setting his sights on Villopoto. Eventually, Millsaps and Dungey closed the gap on Villopoto following the halfway point with all three riders sitting within a second of one another at one point. Millsaps had an opportunity to make a move for the lead, but Villopoto withstood the pressure and the difficulty of getting through lapped traffic to lead all 20 laps and clinch the title on a high note.

“It’s unreal,” said Villopoto, who tied his career best total of nine wins in a season. “It was a crazy race and the track was really technical. Any little mistake would make it anyone’s game. We [Monster Energy Kawasaki] started the season off really rough and had a lot of stepping stones to overcome, but we did it as a team and we did it well.”

Villopoto became the fifth rider in Monster Energy Supercross history to win three championships, joining Bob Hannah, Jeff Stanton, Jeremy McGrath, and Ricky Carmichael. He also joined Hannah, McGrath, and Carmichael as the only riders to win three titles consecutively.

Millsaps overcame a start outside the top five to finish second, with Dungey in third. The pair sits second and third in the championship, respectively, and are separated by three points heading into the final race of the season next weekend.

In the Western Regional 250SX Class Championship Main Event, GEICO Honda’s Zach Osborne captured the Nuclear CowboyzHoleshot Award with teammate Eli Tomac and Anderson closely behind. Anderson made a quick pass on Tomac prior to the conclusion of the opening lap and then passed Osborne for the lead on the following lap.

As Anderson started pulling away, Tomac started to go in the opposite direction. The winningest rider in the Western Regional Championship this season had the opportunity to take over the points lead after Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen failed to qualify for the Main Event. However, Tomac continued to lose positions, eventually dropping to ninth place.

Out front, Anderson won by over five seconds, leading every lap of the Main Event.

“It’s crazy,” exclaimed Anderson. “The last five laps were definitely tough to be out front. To come out with a win, I’m stoked. This team has been there for me from the beginning and to get a win for them is awesome. I always seem to race well here [in Salt Lake City]. I’m not sure what it is, but I like it.”

Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely charged to a runner-up finish, while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Martin Davalos overcame a start outside the top 10 to finish third. Tomac rebounded from his early difficulties to battle his way to a sixth-place result.

“I started the race in second, but just blew it in the whoops,” said Tomac. “It was a section that just got me all day. There were a couple passes where I got through them ok, but there were others where I got wild and out of control.”

“It was a bad night, definitely not what I came here to do,” said Roczen, whose crashes in the Heat Race and Last Chance Qualifier prevented him from making the Main Event.

“I wanted to finish the season off strong, not with a DNF at the second-to-last race. As much as I had bad luck tonight, I did get a little break with Tomac finishing sixth, so I still have the championship lead going into Las Vegas [season finale] next weekend. I will need to ride the race of my life there.”

Roczen entered the night with a 20-point advantage over Tomac, but now just five points separates the duo heading into the final stop of the Western Regional 250SX Class Championship.

Monster Energy Supercross will bring the 2013 season to a close next weekend from Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday, May 4.

Dungey takes a tight third in Salt Lake SX

Courtesy of KTM

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey earned a 450SX third place podium in the penultimate round of the AMA Supercross Series but 250SX teammate Ken Roczen of Germany failed to qualify for his main event after crashing in the qualifying.
The event saw points leader Ryan Villipoto seal the 450 title while Roczen now takes his 250SX title chase to the final round in Las Vegas promising to deliver ‘the race of my life”. Roczen goes to Vegas as points leader but with a narrow five-point margin.

Dungey was up in the first 450SX heat where he earned the holeshot to take the early lead. He went on to lead every lap of the eight-lap heat to take the win and top qualifying spot into the main event. It was his first heat race victory of the season.

In the main event Dungey blitzed out of the gate for another holeshot but then Villopoto cut inside of him on the second corner and took over the lead. A lap later Davi Millsaps challenged Dungey for the runner-up position. They then began a three-way, race-long battle and remained within two seconds of each other through the entire 20 laps. They all turned impressive lap times eventually lapping all the way through eighth position but at the flag it was Villopoto who hung on for the win, followed by Millsaps and Dungey.

It was a close race tonight,” commented Dungey. “I’d like to thank the entire Red Bull KTM team for building me a great bike. We are still very close to second place in the championship standings and we are looking forward to battling for that position in Vegas.

Drama for Roczen in the 250s at Salt Lake
Meanwhile Ken Roczen had the unthinkable happen at the penultimate round of his competition when he crashed in both the heat and LCQ and did not qualify for the main event.

Roczen was fourth off the start in the second heat but collided with another rider in the second corner. He recovered in dead last but quickly moved up five positions before he ran off the track after trying to avoid a down rider in the whoops. He then pulled off the track and returned to the pits in order to save energy for the last chance qualifier leaving JDR/J-Star/KTM rider Malcolm Stewart to take his first heat victory this season.

The German rider had a great jump out of the gate in the LCQ before another rider came clear across the start straight and took out a group of riders including Roczen. He quickly recovered but had to come through the entire pack as he pushed toward the top two. Ken gave it his all in the four remaining laps but was two bike lengths short of qualifying for his main event when they passed the flag, Only the top two from the LCQ advance to the final.

I’m really disappointed,” Roczen said. “ I had a big (points) lead going into this race and now it’s going to be very tight in the final round. I had a bit of a break with Eli Tomac (second in points) finishing sixth tonight, and luckily, I still hold the points lead. I’m going to remain as positive as possible and do my best to win in Vegas and hopefully get the championship title.
