Colorado Springs, CO (Jan. 8, 2013) — USA Cycling has announced that Mike King will no longer hold the position of BMX program director. Those responsibilities will be assumed by Jamie Staff, a former BMX world champion, within his recently-appointed position of high performance director of sprint programs. James Herrera will continue as USA Cycling’s national BMX coach.”I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to USA Cycling and the USA Cycling BMX program,” said Vice President of Athletics Jim Miller. “Mike’s involvement in developing and launching the USA Cycling BMX program prior to Beijing was instrumental in the initial success of the program, and I would like to wish him the best in all of his future endeavors.”
King was hired by USA Cycling in 2007. He was based in Chula Vista, Calif., where he directed the national governing body’s BMX program at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (OTC). In 2008, the U.S. won three Olympic medals at the Beijing Games. During King’s tenure, American athletes also took home five world championship titles and 14 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup wins. He also oversaw the creation of both of the supercross tracks at the Chula Vista OTC.
